Hi guys I've got a really strange starting problem that has come out of nowhere!!

When I put the key in the ignition first thing this morning the glow plug light came as normal waited till the light went out went to start the truck and for some reason I took my hand of the key before it fired then again turned the key and no glow plug light ??

I then thought I'd try and turn it on without the glow plug light coming on then going off had the key in the position where it should fire and nothing !!

Not even a click from the starter motor, all the lights were on, no dimming of the lights, I've fitted the truck with a volt gauge that was showing 12 v.

By this time I had flicked the key on and off about 5 times and the same happened every time,

Then out of anger I just held the key on and after about 10 seconds vroom

She fired up starter motor sounded normal and when started runs perfect !!

So when I got to my destination I thought I'll try and guess what nothing

Waited 10 or so seconds again vroom she fired again !!

So I thought its got to be glow plug relay so I changed it for a 2nd hand one

And once again exactly the same problem it's like a massive delay when the key is in the on position then all of a sudden vroom it fires up

But I have noticed when the truck is left for a while say an hour or so, I go to start it then the glow plug light comes on and it starts perfect,

But if i then turn the truck straight off after starting it the glow plug light doesn't come on and I'm left with this delay and it just fires

The starter motor is only 18 months old and was brand new when fitted but if it was the starter motor surely it wouldn't start at all

I remember what the starter motor sounded like when it gave up.

What else could it be ??

.

Yep both battery terminals are fine just got the missus to turn the key the starter solenoid can be heard but not going to turn but if I leave the key in the on position for long enough the truck starts and the starter spins up as It should

probably ignition switch backplate of the key.

.

If it was the ignition switch would the solenoid be heard ?

Has anyone got any pics of the ignition switch thing ?

If I hold the key in the final position where it should be starting what changes
And makes it start all of a sudden ??

if the starter solenoid can be heard clicking, then it is either starter or bad main cable tween battery and motor or less likely a bad main earth strap, Rick.....ps if you are coming to Boxgrove on Sunday we can try your Maff then

.

Hi rick I was thinking of whacking a 2nd hand ignition switch in to see what that does tomorrow and checking and double checking all the cables and wire to and from the battery and starter.

Also rick il be at boxgrove Sunday mate il be their from 12ish , I'd love to try the maf if that's ok

geoffdown is right no point going used get a new one, but as I said before if the starter solenoid is making a good sound and not turning then most likely starter failure, look forward to seeing you on Sunday, Rick

mine was making good sound but as soon as i replaced the ign switch all was well again might not be ur problem but the ign switch is 1 alot easy to fit and try then the started and 2 alot cheaper to try then the starter 1st:thumbs

starting problems

i had a problem a few years ago and after lots of messing about it was the ignition ,i disconnected the wires from the back and ordered a bog standard ignition off ebay with two keys the type you would have on a lawnmower and drilled a hole in the bottom of the plastic shroud and fitted it there and just left the old key in just to operate the steering lock i thought it might cause a problem on MOTS but was told it was ok and it was on for years .

.

Finally sorted the starting issue !!!

It was simply the small wire to the starter motor was thread bare further up the wire took all of 5 mins to sort out

Just cut the wire soldered a new bit of wire in place with a new connector

All sorted starts every time without fail !!!
