Had the clutch replaced 4 weeks ago on my Mav 2.7TD and it drives fine. However, just recently I have noticed a grating noise the first few set-offs on cold mornings, albeit in 4wd in snow. After a few set-offs, its never heard again. It happens when I take up the drive. Is this normal? Or is it a faulty release bearing, although it should have been renewed?

If you've got auto hubs it could be they're taking a little longer to engage in the slippy stuff:augie
As it happens in 4wd only I guess it must be related somehow?
How much was your clutch job by the way?

talk a look at teh downloads, there a service sheet fo rauto hubs.

The clutch 390 including 6 hrs labour - in at 8.30 back 2.30 finished.
Yes I do have auto hubs.
many thanks

i'm glad zippy 656 said what i ws thinking, as i tend to blame everything on auto hubs, but it des sound like it to me!

That grating noise you hear will be the dog.s bowl off the yard wedged under the wheel of you truck, :lol My old terrano When it was cold would allways throw the 4 wheel drive in, I would have to stop put the stick in 4 wheel drive go forward about 30 yard stop pull her out of 4 wheel drive and she would be fine all day then. Could be wrong but i put that down to putting to much grease in the hub,s, :doh As they say lesssssssssss is more at times,. All so check the pipe on the slave cylinder they bugger up from time to time. ie collapse in side, There for will not let fluied through fast enough. And worse on a cold morning. You dont seem to notice this in warm weather. As fluied.s are thinner

My wife said today when we set off it was more of a whirring/screeching like something running dry (she was outside the car).
When I got down the lane to a non-snowy road, I put it in 2 wheel drive and reversed. When I set off, there was still a screech for a second or two.
after that, nothing all day.
Any more clues, or is it definately the hubs?

As I understand it the transfer box uses Dexron oil, this is a very thin oil, used so that at very low temperatures the drag on the oil dosent drive around the gears and cause the front drive shafts to rotate and therefore connect the auto hubs when in 2 wheel drive

might be as simple as the propshaft universal joints/couplings needing regreasing after being disturbed during the clutch replacement and no harm done if it doesnt effect a cure.

It does feel as if something is releasing - off on the very first cold set-off, like a 'jerk' then the screech kicks in.

I hate to state the bleedin obvious, but you never know. Have you tried spraying the belts under the bonnet with WD40 while the screeching is going on?

Have thought of that and will give it a go tomorrow. Noise is a bit similar to a a Hyundai I had whose power steering made a noise. But as i'm driving the mav can't spray it as it sets off -would have to spray area first to see if it didn't do it at all. It doesn't make a noise until you set in motion.

Does this mean this is normal on cold starts and i should do nothing?

no it's not normal, my t2 is quiet when first started, but i have also had auto hub problems and i must admit it sounds like the brake rings in the hubs squealing, may be because they are worn below the limit and cant engage fully, i know the brake ring can break but they also wear out. :thumb2

hi. dose it make the noise when you take off in 2 whell drive? i had a problem like that in my old jeep when a new clutch was fitted!! it was ok for two weeks then a nasty noise had to go back for the clutch to be adjusted:( dose the clutch bite straight way as soon as you move the pedal! iv had my far share of things wrong on my 4 wheel drives.. thought they were tuff:nenau

It did the noise momentarily in two wheel drive after I had reversed to disengage the hubs. Clutch comes in fine and is not near the top. what was initially worrying me was there a problem with new clutch bearing?
Once it has done its initial set off out of my drive, which is tight so I have to go forwards then reverse to get out, the noise is not heard for the rest of the day.
It just so happens that it is currently packed with snow so I have to go in and out in 4WD, then returning to 2WD for normal driving.
If I meet more snow, it does 4WD ok with no noises. Just the initial daily set-off.

don't use wd40 on your belts, they will disintergrate over time. use talc,(yes talc) as this stops the screaming without ruining the rubber and/or making it worse by making it slip more as you contaminate the belt with oil.
i can't comment on these drive trains as i dont know much about them. if it is engine related i will chip in though.
