starter question

Quick question. Took starter motor off last week and can't remember which way round the bolts go. Does the longer one go at the top or at the bottom ?

Starting problems all pointed to dodgy starter but now tested and is fine. Now trying to find why there's not enough power getting to it.

I think the thin threaded bit goes down the hole and the big hexagon bit stays outside. :lol:lol:lol

Reminds me of Paddy who was plaster boarding a room, he was throwing out every other nail, as the head was on the wrong end...

I have not done this job, but can't you just try each bolt in the holes, if they are different lengths, it should be easy to see.

Good advice..
Thread them in say 6 complete rotations, the dimension to the bolt head should then be the same as the thickness of the part on the starter motor.:thumb2
If unsure, then swap them over and the difference will be obvious.:thumb2

Fitted in the bottom as the casing looked bigger than top. Anyway all bolted up and still not starting !!!!!! Had new starter, battery, clamps and ignition .


Any ideas ?

how many volts you got at the starter [at the thick wire] if 12+ then turn key to start, if voltage drops right off you have a problem with the cable could be bad connection battery end.
IAEF check the manual there is a fault finding list.

Also, have a gander at your engine earth strap, these can break down over time with all the oil and muck.
Try a jump lead from a good body earth to a good engine earth, just a thought

Tried that already as well as starter positive direct to battery. Still nothing.

Think a gallon of petrol over it will be cheaper , quicker and warmer :lol

It's got to be something simple mate, what you need is a good auto electrician

Yes got a few mates but I can only do on a Sunday . Think I might have a jammed alternator so will whip tha off and check.
