Just an update, I think the starter may be knackered in the terrano!

Sometimes - after the alternator problem fix - it fires no problem, but sometimes its a bit hesitant and sometimes I get a graunching noise as it turns and fires up.

I take it this is the starter showing reluctant signs of death!

While we are on it, I take it it is normal for the car to beep when you turn the ignition key for a couple of seconds and then stop?

mine doesnt beep , unless a door is open

Mine beeps when you turn ignition on and off after the battery has been disconnected. Could it be a loose battery lead causing issues for you? can be the earth where it connect's to engine and body. also the positive terminal, think the cable grows weak with the movement and breaks.

my old pajero use to beep at me when starting and turning off but that was down to the clifford alarm also the bloody thing used to arm the alarm after 2 mins of the ignition out that didnt half annoy me lol

AH, drivers door has been open! That would be the beep then.

ANy ideas on the starter?

My starter failed over about a 2 year period, it behaved like a flat battery which confused matters for a long time.
There's two types of starter, one seems to have the domed head and the other has an open gear. I've been told both will fit but I replaced like for like on mine.

Exactly what mine has been doing, hard to crank over (lazy) at times and really easy at others! Mine has the bell housing.

You'll be pleased to know that's the more costly version:doh

They're a pain to do as it's a tight fit downthere. You can peel back the plastic arch liner from drivers side arch to gain access but the starter seems to come out through the top. Clivvy did his own last year so he may be able to give a bit of advice. It was far too cold for me to work outside last christmas so I paid a mechanic to do it for me but he caused more problems. He removed the dipstick tube and in doing so lost the bolt which also fastens the oil cooler on so I had a big water leak that wasn't his fault honest:doh

I was under the impression that the bell housing could be removed and then fitted to the new starter? Thought it was this one unit:

I'm not sure about the housing. All I know is that I needed ASAP so went to Andrew Pages and they took my reg and got the correct one from that.

Like I said I'm pretty sure Clivvy posted something about it so you could do a search on his posts.
