Starter motor !!!

Put new starter on 6months ago last week it started to click so took it off and back to local motor factors,he sent it back to his supplier who stripped it and said it was fell of water and mud.so I told a very little white lie that I don't offroad !!!!!! Anyway question is how due I stop the same thing happening again.i thought the electrics etc on the starter would be waterproof

Saying that tho I have not had a problem, I don't think rick or makeitfit have either and they've seen shit loads of mud especially rick

Had to take mine off once so far, only had a bit of water in it, but car sits for two weeks between outings and sometimes a month so corrosion set in on the solenoid plunger, just gave it a clean up and a wipe with oily rag, Rick

This is exactly the reason that I want to get some arch liners refitted!!!!!

I replaced 3 of them in 2 years.

Bloody expensive job replacing them.its either stop offroading or try and seal it somehow!!!!! I think I will be sealing it

they will not do you any good, if you are sat in water then everything will get wet, I regularly have to remove my alternators to clean the mud debris from them but the starter seems better protected, Rick

Is it easy to remove. Can the solenoid be changed or repaired as mine is sticking sometimes. Reverted to wacking it as a short term fix as away with the caravan for a while

Has any one ever bought one from milners, and are they up to the job.?

ok cheers rick, but might sound a daft question..... how the heck do you get a spanner or socket on the top bolt to undo it? tried all sorts. any sensible ideas will be much appreciated

Dont know how to fix a starter motor but if you've got beer in that caravan I can help you get it off

Would off gladly bought you a few pints. Back home now in wales now. Tried to remove it but couldn't get anything to attack the bolt. Still wacking it to start

My mate bought a starter from milner offroad.It was ok on his truck now fitted to my Dad's he hasn't had any trouble with it either..

Hi all,

Top bolt does come off easier if you have a ratchet spanner 17mm me thinks, changed mine a month ago see photos "replacing front wings" in bodywork&chassis". It is a 2man,Ooops 2 person job and it comes out upwards with thin rope attached,it's easier going back.

im getting to be a bit of an expert at this now:doh, first remove the oil dipstick,(the one for checking the oil, im not being rude:lol) then remove the plug and the main strap on the nut then also remove the plug that connects to the engine block just above the starter, then if you remove the bolt holding the wiring loom to the head theres loads of room to get in. i use a ratchet spanner on the top bolt but it takes ages as small increments are the key. once undone top and bottom pull the whole lot backwards (towards the front of the car) and put two fingers in next to the drive sprocket and it should come straight out the top. this is on a 2.7td not sure its the same on them all. vince

secondly thanks for the advice

and finally i have managed to remove it, the problem i had was my 14mm ratchet spanner was a bit too thick on the outer diameter so i had to use a thinner one, if that makes sense,
