Sounds like you battery is shot, from flat it should take 30mins to get to 14.2 if it takes a lot less time that indicates low capacity, Rick

To clarify the 14.2 volts.was output from alternator, read from a plug in volt meter in the cigar lighter, not the charge of the battery

I shall however disconnect battery after taking a reading tonight and test again in the morning to see if it has dropped when disconnected.

Yes 14.2 is alternator out volts, it is also your battery voltage, which is fully charged as indicated by the 14.2, if the battery was incapable of starting the engine then you would expect to see around 12v alternator output as the flat battery is taking a charge and pulling the voltage down, with a good battery this voltage will gradually rise and take around half an hour, Rick

Thank you for the replies but sorry to disagree, the voltage from the alternator is not the voltage of the battery even when saturated a car battery will not hold 14.2 volts.

Don't get drawn into a blinkered look at alternator and battery voltages. I charged the battery on a heavy duty charger not from the alternator. I commented on the alternator voltage so as to rule a lack of charge from it out of the equation. The discharge time Whilst the battery was connected and I was obtaining the fault code, is what I have revered to, that being about 45 mins tops. Not the time it took to charge.

The question I could do with clarification on is regarding the disconnecting of the alternator to test for drain, is it the plug at the rear of the main positive cable or both of you'd be so kind?

Re the alternator to test for diode drain, remove the large cable, this is connected direct to the battery, Rick

Thanks Rick. Just about to go test battery again now after leaving -ve connection off over night. I know it is a late start but I'm a bit poorly at the moment.

When I tested the connection from alternator to battery yesterday the bulb did not light but I will test again

Battery reconnected after 16 hours voltage 12.8v a little reluctant but started first attempt. Still not 100% happy with the starter so may get electrical test of battery alternator and starter tomorrow but in the meantime a battery isolator is probably the first step and then more investigating to find the culprit.

Sounds like you battery is shot, from Rick

Last night battery was at 12.8v when -ve disconnected.
Today reconnected and battery down to 12.2v - failure to launch :(

Seems like the starter has destroyed a perfectly good battery after all.

I could weep.

No the battery was less than a year old and never missed a beat starting my 2.9 Rexton and was topped up without over cooking every month. Plus was a decent 100A 900Ah.

Never mind slightly less beefy replacement should be arriving tomorrow.

Replaced MAF and now car goes like a rocket! When I can get it to start. Been trying it jumped on the once decent battery but very reluctant to turn over. Decided to get my hand on the starter to see if it was getting warm. Darn thing was nearly red hot. Taking it off again tomorrow and getting refund.

Had the starter back off today and opened it up. Very much looks like the guy forgot a bush at the end of the armature. The soft alloy of the gear housing had worn oval if it had ever been replaced. So the thing was as bad as it was before he took the £75 from me. I had him return that to me but still out of pocket for the battery the thing destroyed.
2.5Kw, as opposed to the 1.9Kw standard, starter ordered from eBay should be here by Sat.
Meanwhile resisters and potentiometer have arrived so a little electronic tinkering perhaps tomorrow.

Replacement (new) starter motor finally arrived this afternoon. Despite it being without the bullet nose it was an absolute sod to get in position and then the amount of turn availble on the bottom bolt was half a face each attempt with the spanner. Took forever but finally got it on. New battery in and Evry mod all wired up.

Started first turn.

Goes really well although all too easy to over do the Evry at the moment. 6 o clock on the dial reads 1000 ohm but booting it in this position causes limp mode. It even seems that limp mode may even initiate when the Evry is off, although not 100% certain.

Could the Limp mode coming on be due to the MAF being a cheap knock off?

Anyway so far so good. Very nippy without themod: even more so with.
