For this to happen it seems to me it can only be the starter solenoid sticking/slow on the first try, but after the first try some heat will have been generated and on second try once the parts have expanded it works, but it definitely cannot be linked to the gear lever switch, Rick

No I dont think it is connected to the switch directly. I think the switch can just be used as a guide, as it just needs more time than normal between ignition position 1 and engaging the starter . If you do this it will start first time every time.the fault could be in the solenoid or in a relay or just a bad connection,Who knows!
