The offside headlamp dip bulb blew on the WK Jeep so when it stopped raining on Friday I pulled the bonnet catch to see how accessible the bulb holder was. Decided it was doable so took off the air cleaner top to minimise my inevitable bruising & bleeding as I reached for the bulb holder.

Bulb came out a treat then realised it was not like the spare bulb I had for our WJ as its a type H11 that has a built in 90 deg elbow. Nipped out to local car spares emporium and purchased a pair. Back home and fitted the bulb - all good & working.

At this stage I looked at the nearside headlamp and it was obvious the battery had to come out then it was an easy job.....but. I then noticed that part of the bulb seal housing was missing. A small ring that the main headlamp seal fit to is held in with 3 screws. Some idiot has removed the ring thinking that it was necessary to remove the bulb holder - false.

I could see that as the ring is missing water or condensation can enter the lamp unit. Now need to visit local breakers to search for a similar ring. I have seen the bulb holder design on other vehicles but clearly it is not a part sold separately.

It's something I can't just leave I am going to have to track one down or come up with an alternative way to seal the unit.

I was readung on one of the Jeep forums that a guy was convinced you had to undo the 3 screws. Myself and a couple of others said that was wrong, but he was having none of it... left him to it in the end.

Falling on deaf ears.

Some folk just will not listen, TBH if the bulb has been in place for a few years and the rubber seal that is part of the new bulb has stuck fast you could be mistaken to think that the ring has to be removed. They can be hard to rotate and remove - especially difficult as you can't get the best purchase with your finger tips in such a tight space!

As a temporary measure I might just fit some Duct Tape over a shoe polish tin lid and stick it on like a plaster !!

My works van is a 2017 Fiat Ducato. I had a headlamp blow and as I was heading to the main garage anyway, I asked them to change it. The first mechanic struggled for a few mins and have up, due to lack of space. The next removed 2 self trappers and out came the whole unit. It took just a couple of mins.
The wife's focus has only 1 screw and 2 clips to remove it.
