hi i have a problem with my 97 2.7tdi it will start up and then sometimes cut out and i notice when it cuts out i get the orange light on the dash blinking(the shape of a engine with the word check on it) if it dos not blink then it will start any help will be greatly appreciated

not ignorant at all my friend. The CKP is located at the front of the engine. If you open the bonnet, and looked between the alternator belt on the right side, peer in there.....its there...small round black thing with a single wire coming out the top, and up by the thermostat to the loom on the left, its held in by one bolt. Its a bit tight, but easily a DIY job, which is a good thing because they arent cheap new, although you may get lucky and get a working one from a scrapper, you can even try cleaning it, but to be honest, its a magnet, so over time and under heat, its just not effective any more.

As for the codes, the workshop download is all you need, that and a paper clip! follow that, grab your codes, and lets start from there!

well done matey, good work. Do keep an eye on it though, if it starts happening again, you may need a new one (its just a magnet). I'm well chuffed for you a good clean solved it though!
