So at cold idle until engine warms, my Terrano has developed a really high pitched squeek which seems to be coming from the idler pulley on the engine.

I'm going to replace for a new one but not done the jobs before, I presume the rad and water pump need to come off for access so I'll do all the belts at the same time.

Are there any special tools needed for the actual removal of the pulley and refit?

Anyone ever done the job?

With the engine running, gently pour a cupful of water over the fan belts, stand back as it will splash.

If the high pitch sound goes, it's only the fan belts. If so, either ignore it, replace the belts, adjust the belt tension or apply a spray of WD 40, now some will say don't use WD40, collects grit or something.
I replaced my belts about 15+ years ago, and have used WD40 occasionally and the belts have been fine. So if it damages the belts, I would have found out by now lol.
Be aware, mine doesn't get used off road, so maybe if it did, the belts might not last long anyway, due to picking up abrasive mud.

Might help to diagnose the problem. :thumb2

Water Test

On my old Mercedes 230 E the Serpentine belt would make a terrible sound when it was raining ! I guess it was load related visual inspection revealed belt was cracking on the inside.
As a short term measure I used some belt lubricant until I replaced the belt and it was OK.

On our old Santa Fe tried the belt lubricant and it worked for about 10 sends then sound returned - had to have the tensioner pulley wheel replaced.

Thanks both :thumb2

I think I'm just going to replace the belts as they haven't been swapped in my ownership I'm ashamed to say :doh

I wouldn't feel too bad about that, they're probably the only bits on your vehicle that haven't been replaced.

Ooooo, that's harsh!

Rustic and I are obviously reading from the same hymn sheet.

It's very difficult improving on perfection.

:sly

I've done all the mods that she requires (eight ball gear knob!), not sure what else I can do!:nenau

It's all about getting the correct vehicle to start with, LWB, 3.0ltr, fsh, low mileage.

:augie

Could do with a wash though...

Horses for courses, if the circumstances don't call for any mods then don't do any, if it's earning it's keep as it is then you're onto a winner.

Mine doesn't NEED to me as modified as it is, if I'm honest, if it wasn't for going laning I could have probably left mine totally standard and it would have been fine.

The bug just kinda takes a hold sometimes....... :nenau

No special tools needed, and no need to remove the water pump, just the fan, Rick
