Hi all,

I'm thinking of spraying the centre console a different colour. Not so keen on the walnut colour. Any tips or advice from you guys that have already done it?

Which paint? primer needed? How did you prep it?

Thanks, Shaun

Carbon Wrap ?

I think you might have a problem with making it chip resistant in the long term how about a Carbon Wrap or some other type of similar finish such as Stainless Steel effect ?

At least if you change your mind you can just pull it off and go back to how it was.

I've been here done that and wished I'd never bothered :lol I've never found a paint that doesn't flake off.

I did 2 layers of grey plastic primer and 2 layers of matte black paint when I did my interior trim panels initially and I tested it with my fingernail after a few weeks and it went straight back down to the cream plastic underneath :(

Done a lot of research into this since and managed to find a product called TRG Vinyl Dye that actually stains the plastic a different colour rather than just spraying another colour on top, it's expensive but I've seen some of the testimonials that people have uploaded with pics to the website at it really does look like it works. Going to get some and re-do all my interior parts over the winter.

the plastic stuff needs a clear chemical pre primer to make the plastic primer stick.you can get spray cans of it.
how do you think us sprayers would cope if paint falls off, though i see a lot of plastic flaking.

Vinyl Dye

If the surface is Vinyl then the Vinyl Dyes do work I did a full Mini Interior in the 1960's a local firm Quadralene used to manufacture these products for the Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
You could also buy it in a tin as a brush on Dye. It worked really well and left no brush marks being a satin type finish. Cleaning the old surface was a must I used the Green Swarfgega to do this scrubbing off afterwards with a nail brush and water. Allowed to fully dry then cleaned with a keying / cleaning agent they supplied.

The Vauxhall Dealership where I worked part time had it's own Body Shop in the old California Works premises off Parliament Street in Derby (Now demolished for housing I think). We like many other Vauxhall Dealers at the time sprayed interior Trim Panels for the Luton Car Factory. Every month or so a large Goods Vehicle Would drop off the new unpainted Vinyl door Cards etc and they were sprayed with Vinyl Dye. The panels would be collected the following month when the next batch arrived. It was quite well paid and kept the paint shop busy all the year round.
