hiya mate, I have the spot lights hooked up to my roof rack, its really easy and I have some pics in the gallery under Terrano II, bluebull, have a look and see if thats what you might be after, if so give me a shout and I will give you full instructions, cheers Paul

Hey bluebull,where did you get your roofrack?
Is it a Thule?

They look great, hadnt thought about rectangle ones but they look the business!! How did you go about hooking them up to the lighting circuit?

Cheers

hi bluebull, i,m considering putting some spot lights on a roof rack. i was wondering which is the best way to run the wiring loom from the spot lights to the battery :?:

the wires can be slotted in to a cavity behind the door/body seal then routed down a pillar and into engine bay.

Ok,me spots are on the rail,4 Ring round ones!! how do i wire these up and am i going to have to uprate the fuse for the lights?? :roll: :|

You won't need to up rate the head light fuse but you will need to fit a relay and preferably a separate fuse to power the lights.

I've taken my spots off for now, but I used a fog light switch from another truck, picked up a feed from the back of the dip/main beam stalk, through the ew switch to a relay, in the relay box under the bonnet and then ran power feeds from the battery to the relay and on to the lights. It would be the same regardless of where you mount the lights.

This means the spots dip with main beam (legal requirement) but are only on when I want them to be.

Ooooo Cosmic you've beat me to it :evil: :lol: :lol: You will have to wire them in pairs & fit a relay per pair. I would take a feed from the battery for these & fit a switch in the cab.
I'm sure HB will beable to put it better :roll:

You don't need to wire them in pairs, all 4 at once is ok as long as you stick to 55watt bulbs, but you might like to as its more flexible if you put 2 switches in too.
4 x 55 = 220 => 18.3 amps

but

4 x 100 = 400 => 33.3 amps

Most relays are 30amp max or less.

You must however make sure they do switch in pairs or multiple s of though as by law they must always come on in pairs.

So i can't just take a feed from the high beam,so when i flick high they will come on at the same time,is it better to have them on a seperate switch??

You can do without a switch but roof lights (and spotlights n general) do tend to attract the wrong sort of attention from the boys in blue. Used sensibly on side roads they aren't a problem, its putting them on on A and B roads and around town that can be an issue.

You at least need a relay as the standard wiring for the headlights will not be up to the job of powering 4 more lights, at best you'll get 6 really dim lights and at worst you could end up with a fire.

Hello Cosmic,
When i had mine on a roof bar i put a switch between full beam and the roof lights so that i could have them come on with full beam when it was safe too or i could switch them off completely but still have full beam on normal front lights.

Looks way too complicated for me!!!

Think i'll just need to attach the lights to the bar and go for the look instead of working lights!!

you may not be allowed i got stopped once in fiat 127 it only had one spot working coper told me they must work if fitted so i got out and booted them off that solved that!

No matter if you use 4x 55watt bulbs and a 30 amp relay or 4x 100watt bulbs and a 50 amp relay, make sure the supply and earth wires to the lights are the correct gauge and can take the current needed to run them either one strand or multiple strands of wire.

looks like my local auto shop will be getting a visit tomorrow :lol: :lol:
