You're right there was a later diff used - I can never remember what it was from, but Terranosaurus did say it was something like the L200 or maybe a Navara?? Its the one with a bolt-on backplate and a smaller oil volume, but I thought it was still the clutch-pack type, so still needed proper LSD oil....

yes I have come across they bolt on cover plate type and yes it is the clutch pack type, so needs the LSD, in fact that was why the guy came to me, but I have to say when he arrived it sounded like a wheel bearing had gone, any way LSD oil sorted it, Rick

Wow didn't think that LSD oil made that much difference to the noise, any noise to me, means energy being lost, and something wearing out rapidly. :doh

True Story
Many years ago my Father in Law was suffering from acute ear ache, at the same time my mother-in-law was suffering with a lost voice. ( Both worn out ).

I said to them "Do you think there is any correlation between the two incidents ?".....
They saw the funny side of it...:lol :lol

well it is supposed to be changed every 40,000 miles and like all oils deteriorates with age, so when you consider most vehicles will have been out of 3-year warranty by this point and being serviced at independents (if at all!), its invariably left to its own devices....

I've short listed my tyre choice down to two, General Grabber UHP or AT2 and I'm leaning towards the AT2

Anyone have an opinion (that was a daft question)

I also took my Mav to a quiet ind est to see if I could lose the back end again but was good as gold!

I have AT'2s good grip in wet dry and off road. with the lsd's new oil its quite hard to get the back to step out(but still possible:D) The tyres are wearing well.

I wouldn't go for the UHP tyres, they are like something for a posers car, and they have a very road oriented tread. I would go for the AT2 they are pretty good :thumb2

Good news

Well!!! I fitted the AT2s and the wet handling is impecable (but still playful enough to have fun:sly :naughty)

Haven't yet changed LSD oil as prevous owner says he'd done it:nenau, but I think I'll do it in the summer.

So in summary, if you want suicidle wet handling go for Avon Rangers :banghead

Odd, because i have a full set of Avon rangers and mine is fine, through mud and off road every day, through summer and the snow in winter - no problems at all :nenau

but, i think there may be different tread patterns of Avon rangers - not sure though.

Yeh! I find it hard to believe that a tyre could be so unpredicable and that this Ute hadn't been written off. Maybe a combination of things, I've yet to change LSD oil and fully check comp valve. The Rangers had stated to crack and perish, so its possible that the rubber had hardened. Grabbers have sorted the problem so happy for the Wife and kids to use and it's now safer for other road users too.

General Grabber AT2's

Hi, I fitted a new set of 31 x10.5 R15 AT2's to my Terrano about 14 months ago and I have had no issues at all with them. :thumb2
Sunny, raining, deep snow, mud, steep woodland and rutted muddy forest tracks (Low range) they cope with everything.
Highly recommended rubber. Nice and quiet on the motorway too.

Remember to rotate them on the axles though every few months as I noticed my fronts starting to feather edge after a few thousand miles. Swap em round and all should wear evenly.

Cheers

Steve

Suggest you get your alignment checked :thumb2

One tyre I can recommend is the Maxxis - quiet, hardwearing and good in ALL conditions. The Patrol had the Bravo a/t - which I never got stuck with, whatever the conditions - quiet on road, and handle corners well - the patrol would corner at 70 without a squeal.

The terrano has Trepadors - same again, hard wearing mud tyre, quiet on road and handle well in all conditions.

Ok, drove around a big roundabout today second exit (i.e. striaght through) keeping up with the traffic (40mph area) and did a 180 facing back where I came from and very red faced!! no warning!

I can't see any diesel on the road.

Is this the norm for a ford maverick 2.7tdi swb?? Iv'e only owned it 2 weeks.

Road conditions damp, rear tires (Avon) part warn, fronts new (General Grabber). Could my diff be locked? I notice that when one wheel is jacked up I cant turn it or is this because of the limited diff? shouldn't there be some moment?

I'm all for having a bit of fun, but yikes!

Hi I have a 2.7 LWB mavvy on about 3/4mm tread bfg land terrains running at around 28psi and shes a right b1tch on anything thats remotely damp let alone wet. I'm in total agreement with the don't power into or through the bend it will always break away Good fun sometimes i live in mk the land of the round about and qt regularly get tank slap moments in damp to wet. Now on the other hand the other rims i have have BFG all terrains on and i don't have nearly as many problems......tire choice is i think essential to sticking to the black stuff. and dont boot it........happy driving.....

You need to change your diff oil mate :sly

Got to agree. On decent tyres you can drive this truck like you stole it....its only when flooring it as you pull out of junctions that you get a little bit of scrabbling sometimes...

Agreed mine is starting to lose it on wet corners, deff diff oil but so little time at the mo, Rick

I never had the 'break-away rear end problem on my old 2.7 T2 but the new 3ltr does get a little skittish if I pull out of a bend or from a roundabout a tad forcefully. I hope its not the tyres causing the problem 'cos the "Savero HT Plus GT Radials" (that's what it says on the sidewall -never heard of them before?) that came with it, still have plenty of meat on them and I'm not changing them just to avoid a flighty rear end. I'm going to change the rear diff oil for the pukka Comma LSD stuff and see if that make any difference - watch this space.

What happens when the oil gets old. Does the diff start to snatch?

What happens when the oil gets old. Does the diff start to snatch?

its not really clear but one of the elements of proper LSD oil is that its actually not as slippery as conventional gearbox or diff oil, otherwise the clutch packs wouldn't work properly as they need grip AND lubrication.

I suspect, therefore, that the clutches start to misbehave and you then get all sorts of odd symptoms ranging from weird noises in forward or reverse, to overactive clutch behaviour and thus a bit of snatching, but we've seen a range of symptoms that vanish once the oil is changed (which is supposed to be every 40k miles maximum).

Cheers Mate.

What would be the effect/symptoms of driving a T2 with ordinary differential oil in it? (Not The correct LSD oil)
