Recent acquisition of another lowish mileage (60k) '02 plater (No.4 in the series!) just reinforces my view that these trucks thrive on a good thrashing. When they are driven like little old women they just clog up and go wrong.

This one had been in the latter category and while in mint condition underneath, it has the usual catalogue of issues; leaky sunroof, leaky rear door (all easily fixed) plus a host of minor stuff that is starting to go away now its getting soundly thrashed up and down the M4 to The Land of My Fathers.

Auto box has an odd foible in that when overtaking hard, with overdrive off, it sometimes 'hiccups' - its fine with OD on...so I shall be getting the fluid changed and watching it and if it doesn't go away it WILL BE SWAPPED FOR A L*ND R*VER!!

No.3 truck is at the menders....:doh...France was murder in the heat (or humidity to be more accurate!) and my aircon needed regassing urgently...turns out its because the condensors fecked...thats around £250 to replace then regass.

So I thought I'd get my rattly gearbox looked at - big argument between the guys at the garage over whether its the layshaft or the thrust bearing...most money is on the latter but we'll see when the gearbox gets dropped....if its the box then its off the Swansea to get refurbed (and I nick the wifes truck to go back to France next week, she'll be chuffed!!)..

Buts its £220 for the clutch kit and £300 for the labour (I tried not to smile when he apologetically told me - labour rates in Wales are wonderful!).

So just waiting to see if I get the old girl back in time and without having to fork out for a g/box refurb....still, its only once eh...?:eek:
 
will be interested in what you find with the gearbox as i also have a rattly gearbox when the truck is stood and ticking over it goes away when you press the clutch or raise the revs to around 1000. Just come back from Devon with the caravan and it never missed a beat so might let it develop?

well you can't spend if if you havent got it mate, so enjoy splashing out :thumb2 it's what T2's were made for :thumbs

You should have got Swifty (my fitter) to price it, it would be a lot less than £520. Rick

Cost me that in diesel to get to Essex Rick LOL, plus I'm trying to get it back before my ferry next Weds :)

Sussex, Bexhill is in sunny Sussex near Hastings , but do not forget if it is the layshaft causing your rattle gearbox strip is big job, Rick

I'm expecting that Rick - theres a place in Swansea that would refurb but if the cost is more than the going rate of 500-550 for an exchange recon then thats the route I'd take:thumbs
 
The Verdict...

Ok, Spiderpig, the news isn't good but for me it could have been a lot worse.

The rattling I had consisted of a clattering noise emanating from the gearbox/bellhousing end of things. It only happened in neutral on tickover and was intermittent. Sometimes it didn't make a noise, sometimes it clattered but NOT rhythmically (how the feck do you spell that word?), and sometimes, if you let the clutch pedal up really fast it clattered like a bloody machine gun.:(:(

Anyway, the garage (which has turned out to be bloody excellent IMHO) has removed the gearbox to fit a new clutch...at this point I was half-expecting to be told the g/box is fecked and I'm another £600 out of pocket and stealing wifeys T2 to take to France.:eek:

Instead, the spigot bearing in the flywheel apparently fell out in a pile of shrapnel.:doh

Cheap and cheerful to fix and OK, so I've got a new clutch I probably didn't need yet, but I now know I can rely on the gubbins for a long time to come.:)

My advice? Don't wait for it to fail completely because it will take all sorts out when it does.:thumb2

So Weds afternoon its back to the Land of The Rising Croissant until September (-ish!!)...:):):)
 
Hmmmm I am not convinced, spigot bearing only operates when foot on clutch pedal, other times gear box spigot is held firm by clutch plate, OK it could be a tad out of centre but that wont cause a rattle in the box, Rick :nenau:nenau

but it was in several pieces Rick? :( Soon find out when it goes back together I suppose.....fingers crossed. BTW we aren't talking thrust bearing here...the garage guy only called whatever it is a spigot bearing beause I'm a feckwit...its something else.....
 
The spigot bearing is nothing more than a sintered bronze bush, all the while the spigot was in it the bits were trapped in the flywheel so it was doing its job (steady the end of the spigot shaft while clutch depressed), now if you are talking clutch release bearing then that could cause some noise, likewise f the clutch centre plate is well worn with lose springs that also will give you rattles, but spigot bearing, na, Rick
 
I'll have to get the man to show me the bits when I collect it...hoping the rattle has gone of course!

Thanks Plank.....its all graft sadly, plus the weather has been a bit changeable there, but its got to be better than here! Oh and I miss the Welsh Game Show too :(:(

Rick, would that noise be an odd grinding 'howl' when the clutch is depressed, sometimes with an added 'vibrating metal plate' resonance? Only seems to happen in low gears (1st & 2nd, occasionally third). Oh, I cannot feel any vibration through the pedal when this happens.

Because my T2 has that and I suspected the clutch release bearing, would be nice to get the (admittedly vague) opinion of someone in the know.

Yep that sounds about right for a release bearing gone, where in Sussex are you, I am Bexhill if close you could pop over, Rick

Thats fine wait to hear, if it is release bearing and it breaks up completely it will only do in the pressure plate which will need replacing anyway it could do damage to the fork but if it does it is not the end of the world, Rick

Well, trucks back, just in time for me to leave for France today...new condensor..aircon is freezing first time ever...new clutch...feels soooo much better, oh and the raucous clattering has completely gone after the spigot bearing has been replaced - it fell out in bits and was clearly the source of the noise (thrust bearing was fine).

Total bill £803 which is extremely reasonable - even gave me a new set of locking wheelnuts after I left the key for the existing ones in France :doh:doh:doh

I know how much this would have cost at Home Counties labour rates - probably half as much again - so well pleased.
