The speedo on my 2001 (Xreg) Terrano has never worked properly. Basically the needle just goes up and down all the time the vehicle is moving and it never shows the right speed, sometimes when the vehicle is stationary the needle stays at 20 MPH. The odometer doesn't increment properly (either that or I've only done 2k miles in the last 2 years), the tacho and all other instruments are fine but the odometer display comes and goes with the weather.
Any ideas?

Don't know about the needle all over the place but the digital number fading is a common problem. Mine was changed by previous owner, it's only done 77k lol

common fault dry solder joints on the back of the speedo best get ur smaller mig out ( solder iron) and fix there are company's that will fix it but charge around £100 mine x reg again does the same but having read ur post again the odo is not working it could be the sensor on gearbox or the plug goodluck

wild spedo & odd

Have you tried removing the instrument panel and then whilst driving get someone to wiggle the wiring at the back.
If this fixes it for a few moments then I suspect a dry joint in the printed circuit at the back of the cluster or in the speedometer connections internally.
I had this problem on the rev counter of my r3mR took a chance and basically re-soldered everything I could. Make sure you use a low wattage iron for printed circuits. Fixed mine for about 3 years then it started again- sold the car unfixed as it was just now and again and did not want to risk further soldering.
If no difference then check connections to speed sensor.
