I know this will seem a silly question to most of you, but what is the best way to secure a spare wheel on a roof rack?

Anyone done this and not had it 'borrowed'

Mikey

ive seen many people just strap them down. when i get one end of this year, ill get a hold of a spare wheel carrier from the back of a mav, or another jap 4x4 and mod it to mount onto the rack. at least then it properly fixed down

and you can get a padlock through the carrier and wheel!

if your just going to strap it down a coiled plastic coated cable lock and padlock through the whel and round the roof bars should help deter thieves!

You'll have to watch your weights though,i'm sure on my roof rails it has a 55kg max weight!
I know the tyre won't weigh that much but doesn't leave much else that can go on the rack as well!!
Just a thought

I have 6 Thule bars under a purpose made roof rack, so the weight is well spread. I also carry my roof tent during this time of year (only 17kg), easy for that emergency camping weekend. I could have a party on my roof rack !!

Mikey

The other option I can think of apart from strapping the wheel down to the rack is to pop into your local breakers yard & have a look in a few cars to see how the spare wheels are secured as you might be able to use some of the parts to secure your wheel onto the rack
