You wouldn't have to cut into the bumper as some box section could have a U cut into it so it sits nicely around the tubing of the bumper & then welded in place & a swing away carrier mounted onto the bracket:thumbs

You would probably want a spring to assist the lift, like on the rear doors of horse boxes, or a couple of gas rams, like tail gate lifters on hatch backs.

Re bracket on rear door, I know in the first instance, some people have removed the bracket and simply inverted it to gain an inch or so.

What ever you do, the key is sorting out a suitable bracket adaptor for the rear door, in my opinion.

More body lift...:doh At what point are your drive shafts and prop shafts going to say enoughs enough...

Have you actually taken this truck off road to the limits of what the car can do now?
I recon when you do, you will find the weakest link, could be steeering arms, prop shafts, cv joints, wheel bearings, suspension ball joints, even the torsion bars.
None of these have been tested to the extreme.:augie:augie and most you are putting an extra strain on them in just normal driving too.

My mate has the same cover and he buried his Defender up to the sills, he rang up and Adrian Flux sent a modded Disco 2 from a local garage to winch him out lol

I have the same cover but id double check with them.

But who wants to wait 1 - 2 hours for recovery for a simple puncture. If they find out you have none they may not recover you too.

Alex, clamp the spare wheel to the front bumper bar... it is out of the way, and it is a softer nudge bar when you push something out of the way.

Think about the old VW camper vans with the spare on the front.:thumb2

Why not double up your rear wheels on the rear axle, like transit vans, then you have 6 wheels to choose from, should be able to get a set of four from those...

You will need extending rear wheel arches though.:augie

Alex mate, until you get this roof rack what are you gonna do if you get a puncture or trash a tyre offroad?

I don't understand the reasoning behind getting rid of your spare? When most of us go up a tyre size (eg. me or Elty) we just fit a bigger spare, not get rid of it altogether!

For the record I don't really have any views about taking it off the back door (do what you want, its your truck) but, as usual, you seem to have fired ahead without actually thinking things through :doh

Also the removal of the spare will have nothing to do with the comments you've had from joe public - they're talking about your other mods!

My bumper is still in the original position as it's been lifted with the body and I've got a 33" spare on.
Just make a bracket,sorry get rick to make a bracket:lol that will lift the wheel clear of the bumper.

Unless its a major split the modern repair kits are brilliant. The AA turned out for me on a work Mercedes puncture situation.

The vehicle had a space saver but the chap simply jacked the wheel off the ground to assist with rim seal.
He unscrewed the Schroder type valve and injected some magic liquid into the tyre, replaced the valve and connected his battery driven pump and within 10 minutes all was sorted. It drove as normal on the way back to the dealership. This stuff is great if you have alloy wheels that have corroded and loose air over time.
