Ive got a heck of a squeaking noise coming from my spare wheel bracket. It can be heard inside and outside the car when starting and stopping the engine and when you hit any bumps on the road (which is very often in scotland)!! I removed the spare wheel and this solved the problem but as soon as the weight went back on the bracket started squeaking again. I tried to remove the bracket however could only take off 3 out of the 4 nuts holding it on, the 4th nut seems to be welded on or something. Does anyone know the easiest way to get the bracket off to allow me to work on it? Or have any other ideas on how i can solve the problem.

Thanks

Common problem, something to do with the inner and outer skin of the tailgate. It's some spot welds that have broken. As far as I'm aware you have to drill and bolt them together. There are one or two other threads on this problem if you have a look back in the postings.

HI rag1873
Try adjusting the door catch If you undo the u shaped bracket on the door frame you can move it back allowing the plastic part on the door to fit in to it tighter. This sorted my squeak on the back door.

Hi Rag1873.
I got the same problem several months ago, a horrible squeaking noise from the back door that seemed to centre around the spare wheel bracket,  I removed the door panel (an easy job) and tightened every nut and bolt inside and out, but nothing helped. As a last resort I sprayed the whole squeaking area inside the back door with WD40 (I was clutching at straws really) and low and behold no more rattle and its been silent ever since. :p :p :p a Well worth a try.
Good luck

Thanks all for your help. Looks like its the spot welds. At least i know how to fix the problem now... a job for the weekend. Thanks.

Come and do mine for me please cos I'm too lazy and the wife normally drives mine these days.

My wife wont drive mine coz of the noise the spare wheel is making.... Think i should just leave it as it is, it would give me piece of mind!!!!

Spent all day removing everything from the back door and drilling out the necessary bits etc.... But it hasnt helped the problem!!! Anyone any other ideas!!!

Hi all
I had the same fault I just removed the door panel Drilled a few pilot holes in the brackets then put some self tapping
Screws in then for good measure filled the gaps with some expanding
Foam, job done

I'll give that atry, found it quite awkward working behind the door as my hands were too big to fit in the spaces!! I'll try drilling pilot holes through the bracket into the back door and see if that helps. Out of interest do you know what size of self tapping screws you used?
Thanks

Cant get this sorted at all. No matter what i do to tighten and replace the bolts the noise comes back as soon as i reattach the spare wheel. AAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!

I don't no if it would work but I was wondering if you fitted some rubber from say a bike inner tube between the spare wheel carrier & the the back door if it would stop the noise as the to parts would not be touching

I'll certainly give it a try, i tried putting light padding in but it didnt make a difference. I'll try some more substantial padding. Thanks
