Well at long last got my terrano sorted with the under power issue. After a replacement fuel primer and filter new maf front exhaust pipe couple of vacuum pipes replaced and a smoke test to see if theres any leaks and still the same. So i bit the bullet and booked it in to a local diesel expert 1 hour later and i have a call to say its the neutral position switch on the gearbox, changed and its pulling like a train and all ready to pull the caravan down to devon. Thanks to all who offered advise.

Cheers

Glad it's sorted.
Is it auto or manual gearbox?
Not heard of a neutral position switch.
Ian.

Result... so did he say quite what the Neutral position switch was doing to cause a loss of power?

As asked, I assume it's an Automatic to have a switch to say it's in neutral.

Nope its a manual, he said it was flicking between on/off whilst driving, it has something to do with the 4 wheel drive and its too stop it snapping half shafts

Neutral Position Switch ??

Never heard of such a thing is it connected to the Snake Oil Sensor or is it just something the 3.0 Litre version has?

Have to say using whatever it is talk, yes there is a neutral position switch on the TDi, did not think much of it but it seems if it gives trouble and is read by the ECU then yes a possible problem, rayf should be able to enlighten, Rick way past my hours

:lol :lol

He's having you on mate, no such thing

did the brakes on the Mrs Mk2 a few days ago and my usual trick of applying the brakes while keeping my foot to the floor on the throttle did not work, as soon as I touched the brake the ECU turned the loud pedal off, and yes when I used ecutalk the ECU read that it was or was not in neutral, Rick

interestingly just done a check, the Mrs Mk2 with Bosch pump cuts the throttle on hitting the brake, but my Mk2 with Zexel does not, just how the neutral switch effects the motor is any bodies guess, Rick

So where is this illusive switch

well on the petrol box there are 5 switches to chose from, just been out to look at my off roader which is on the hoist for repairs but there is far too much dry hard mud to see, but guess it will be on the top near the selector rods, to be able to see neutral, Rick

Well now all the doubters have been proved wrong the switch is located on the top drivers side of the box more accessible through the gear stick gator.:thumb2

Ordinarily in normal driving if you lift your foot completey off the accelerator the ECU will reduce the fuelling to zero on over run in order to improve fuel economy.
The speed sensor (VSS) is monitored during this condition to confirm vehicle is moving.
My guess is that if the vehicle is in neutral then fuel shut off on over run will not be applied as it would probably result in engine cut out.
There may be other scenarios where it comes in to the mix too, such as idle.
