As you know tin tents in my opinion have as much right on the road as a blind granny in a morris minor in rush hour traffic :augie :lol

Anyway

I'm on the look out for a cheap tin tent   :doh

& i do mean cheap :augie

Just has to be water tight

ive got one, still repairing it, in fact, been repairing it for thelast two years, its just not happening. we might end up giving up and selling it. its certainly water tight as we repaired all the damp at the rear (properly, by cutting out all bad wood and replacing/treating). Rear lights need checking, and fixing back on, rear handle to fix back on, no kitchen, no toilet/plumbing as it all had to be disconnected to do the repairs. the plan was to put in hot water heater and proper loo, but we fell too far behind!

i think its a good idea, i dont have a problem with caravanas or caravanners, i mean, whats the difference in that on the road, and a transit, or semi rigid truck etc? nowt.

i say go for it, and be proud of your home from home!

lloks like a swift from mid 80s.

traditionally light and good for towing.

4 berth i reckon,

if only 2 of you 2 berths can be cheaper
though at 99p lol not make much difference!

find 2 berths have fixed side long beds more
comfy than making up diner and its jigsaw of
matresses!

Ta for your early input :thumbs

Its purely just going to be a double bed so the normal thing you want like kitchen / shower / heating even toilet aren't really needed :thumbs

so it will need shagging stabilisers then......:augie

:lol

However cheap, it still has to be road legal.
Check tyres are not damaged, and that the brakes work on the overrun, and the auto reverse and hand brake work. Check wheel bearings.
Check all lights etc
Check for excessive corrosion and the corner steadies work.

If all these are ok you should get a few years out of it.

GO FOR IT !!!!

I too used to think caravans should be banned ubtil I got a small 2 berth last year for short breaks... bit of a surprise as I thought the missus idea of camping/caravanning had to have at least 5 stars rating, lots of exotic sun and a beach bar :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2!!! However I too now tow a tin tent (which is the reason I got the terrano :D:D:D) around and do plan to become a mobile road block in many popular holiday destinations this year !!!...

oddly, caravans are demanding higher prices than ever! even the old pattern of 2 berth being cheaper than 4 berth doeesn't seem to be true anymore.

I have an old one of these.

I am looking to replace it, we only use ot for making a cuppa on a patch of greazing land, it has been upgraded and has a cascade 2 water heater and a sttus ariel. When i find a replacment i wil be sellin it pretty cheap.

i have a trailer tent for 3 reasons

1 i have no real space for a caravan and dont want to be charged to store it
2 i cant tow a 6 birth caravan due to time i past my test
3 its cheaper and easier to repair and i dont have to worry about damp

but i would like to have a caravan but as i would have to pay to tow it dosnt prove feasible in the long run

I have an old LMC. Love it. Buying second hand?

Caravans tend to be kept in one place for long periods. I would suggest you buy new tyres for touring and either re-fit them for winter standing or get some winter wheels (they are square and double as a theft deterrent).

Check or have someone check the overrun assembly and brakes. Not so essential in a small van/big car but frightens the crap out of you if you tow a big trailer which is trying to overtake you!

Buy a new gas regulator and connector hose, it's only a few quid, can prevent major problems.

Open the overhead lockers and check for damp.

As said above, for 99p damp isn't so much of an issue because you can afford to throw the 'van away, but do think about changing the tyres (a blow out will turn your car over) and check the overrun brakes.

Otherwise, caravanning is totally brilliant fun, and if others get impatient with you, just simply say "You should have left more time for your journey!" LOL

PS I'm a single woman, I tow a twin axle german (8' wide) caravan - go for it!

That might be an avenue to go down if i don't win the tin tent i'm bidding on :thumbs

:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh OOOOOOH dangerous revelation with all this unexploded testosterone about :)

single woman? where :naughty

yes check for damp, under bunks behind cushions and everywhere, but to be honest in a caravan for a only a few hundred quid your bound to get a bit.

If it doesnt smell of piss and mould and theres no obvious damp patches. Check the mechanicals and then go for it.

Lot of snobbery in the caravan world so you will be laughed at but for 99p or therabouts no problems :thumb2

Should point out that I love showing up caravan snobs. My first set up in the 80's was a brand new modified Astra gte towing a 20year old (or therabouts) well used 2 berth sprite alpine. that old it had gas lights and no leccy but was an absolute beauty and I used to pitch up next to the poshest vans I could find (usually van royces) on the caravan club sites :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'll have to keep my location quiet lol

Agree, there's loads of snobbery - brand new units, brand new cars, matching awnings... matching check trousers OMG! But lots of nice friendly people too.

FWIW think about joining the Caravan Club and/or Camping and Caravanning Club, the fee is £30-odd, you will save that on one week's camping (if you go on club sites).

Won't be retiring with me pipe & flat cap yet :lol
