Even though you don't have any fault codes logged, diagnostic equipment will tell you what the ECM sees from the various sensor inputs:

Water Temp C
Battery
Inj Timg C/V
RPM-Pump
Fuel Temp C
Spill Valve
Speed
Distance
Throttle
Air Flow
Barometer
VNTurbo
etc....

It is possible to monitor these on the fly, so you may see a significant variation in one or more when the hiccup occurs.

Finding Vacuum pipes

I found mine by starting at the brake booster hose and working backwards from there I could not beleive how many mine had !

Must be well over 10 of them including the EGR valve and throttle control solenoid.

Re Diagnostics...

Dont know how old your car is but I had my 1993 Maverick on the diagnostics. I had the best tuning guy in the area onto it, he has 30 years experience as a mobile tuner.
He came spent three and a half hours under my bonnet and out on the road with alsorts of gadgets and gizmos hooked up to the engine. At the end of it all all he could find was a high reading on the 02 sensor, so he handed a bill to me for over £100 and said let me know how you get on...
Needless to say a change of 02 sensor did sod all towards solving my issue :doh

aye, its tricky innit. mines a 97, and i have doubts about the disgnostics. i think i just need to get my head under that bonnet again and check all the pipes, i also need to disconnect the egr and check it, i read that if its stuck open, it can cause minor issues like this..??

Like I said a while back, bin the egr:D
I took mine off and checked it was properly closed and refitted it but left the vac pipe off. Also binned the vac pipe to the anti shake engine stop thing. Then got shot of the oil bypass output that goes to the air intake and blanked off. Also cleaned out the intercooler.
Blanked off the redundant vac hoses at the solenoid end too.
The truck is deffo going better than ever and recently proved to be getting better mpg too :thumbs

actually, i was gonna mail you again for some "dumbass" understandabel instructions!! its just im struggling to be confident in the correct pipe. i have foudn the egr (behind the engine, just below the inteercool) and can trace a pipe over the head to the solenoids below the filter, but it branches off to two i thnk?!!

Yep that's the boyo, just cut the pipe close to the T. Then find a suitable fine gauge bolt and stuff it up the pipe with a bit of silicone or similar.
Simples :thumbs

thats it??

so, remove the EGR, open it up and make sure its closed (how do I make sure it stays closed?), then, literally cut the pipe off at the T and stuff it with somethign to block it?? thats it? what about whats left by the T??

awesome...!

I tried this with mine and got no response at all.
even if I disconnected the pipes and left them open it had no effect on my engine!!!! I'm not sure I got the right part... :doh

Has anyone on here done this with a 2.4i petrol?

The pipework is obviously completely different on the petrol models to the diesels and the downloadable diagram is a bit useless I found. Probably because I am stupid, but I found it no help at all
