If the body can rot so can the chassis, mate. I have seen a Range Rover nearly torn in 2 after it hit a small tree which was approx 9" thick, rot will weaken any vehicle, chassis or no chassis.

My last 2001 Terrano was getting quite rusty in the chassis area, that's one of the reasons I sold it, but I did put it through an MOT first to make sure I wasn't selling a pup.

We cut up quite a lot of vehicles when we are practicing extrication's and you would be amazed how a small amount of rot can weaken a vehicles strength

most cars that r 7 years or older have rust the ranger rover most probley more what i was saying was that small bit of rust that the mav had close to the front x member if it didnt fail mot wont affect strenth but if it was on the main chassis i would say yes get it done properly most cars old with rust or new with no rust if the hit something hard that wont move at speed then thats ur problem not the bit of rust its speed or drink driving

oh and seen today that the rear drop link mounts at the top are rotten to the point i only have one the other one has disappeared into thin air just left the ball joint bit attached to the arb! ooppps! :doh

but i ain't giving up I love it so just going to fix it all, we've got a welder & if you bought one u could either resell if u find no other use for it or keep it

yeah all 4 of mine are like that, i will be attacking it with a grinder but not gonna be welding those just gonna leave them high for big tyres lol

you know i started to think that. see, today, i started tryign to repair one of my front arches. went and got me fibreglas sheeting, started arsing about trying to build up the rather huge gap...looks crap, plus, i used the wrong resin hardner. then i thought, hang on...i really dont need to be making all this effort.

so im going to re think.....

cnc fabs has some good wings i believe , trouble is getting them to you , postage / packing might be a bit pricey
 
Right then, front cross member helps hold the wings and slam panel bits in place and looking nice. If it's rotten like yours, and mine was, then the only down side(apart from MOT failure) is the wings are a bit less well hung on than they should be. The bulkhead back is the proper important bit.
As for repairing it then you've got two avenues I reckon. One as Richo did and the other, my favourite, is to get another cross member off a good one and graft that on, it's much quicker.I did a thread on it somewhere. Ask cnfcfsfabs if he's got one.
Wings can be easily fibreglassed even if there's lots missing. You just need a load of gaffa tape on one side to stop the resin running away. Glass up, then turn it over and grind off the rot. Then fill and paint.I did a thread on it somewhere. Unless you get very lucky and get some s/h wings that aren't looking like the Turin shroud :lol
12 months MOT and a cold snap and bob's your fanny's aunt :D

New cars are designed to crumple ( impact zones) these protect the occupants, rust eats into and weakens any metal structure.
I would want to be in a new vehicle in a crash any day thanks and you don't have to be a drunk driver to be involved in an accident.

I replaced my front cross member with 40mm box section, i welded 2 together to make 80mm x 40mm to make the cross member and then 40mm box on the uprights, then welded some brackets to hold radiator and welded the whole lot to the front, had to repair all around the front above original cross member as well took me a day to do but saved me a fortune in garage fees.
Point is i did it most people can as i am a bus driver and not a welder!!
When it took it for it's MOT i did ask him what he thought he said it's probably stronger than origional.

i no about the crumple zones in cars i for 1 cant aford to buy a new car when it get rusty i no u dont have to be a drunk driver but speed is also in volved my car has abit of rust on wings but i do check to see if the main chassis is ok which it was when i bought the car i then prepared as much as u can with underseal when the chassis is in a bad way looking at it will last at least another 5-8 yrs then my body pannels will start to turn to dust if i still have my truck i will weld what needs doing but alot of the problems with badly crushed cars r speed related and even in a non rusty terrano or modern car if it hits things fast which dont move it wont be pretty out come. by the way i do think makeitfit was spot on i mot car by putting it through mot 28 days before its mot anything they flag up i repair they no whats safe and what not

You don't have to be driving fast to have serious damage to a vehicle, you could get hit by another vehicle, the more good metal you have around you the better:D

u should see the quasqui's that come into my mans work, hit a kerb at 20mph & destroyed the front end!
new subFRAME (FRONT & REAR), and all suspension in between!!

give me a pre 2001 any day!! thats a bashing shakes off & carried on.
