If the body can rot so can the chassis, mate. I have seen a Range Rover nearly torn in 2 after it hit a small tree which was approx 9" thick, rot will weaken any vehicle, chassis or no chassis.
My last 2001 Terrano was getting quite rusty in the chassis area, that's one of the reasons I sold it, but I did put it through an MOT first to make sure I wasn't selling a pup.
We cut up quite a lot of vehicles when we are practicing extrication's and you would be amazed how a small amount of rot can weaken a vehicles strength
