hi guys,

well i am on with sorting some repairs on the Maverick before MOT. I have to repair both front wings, but when I have removed the fornt bumper and wings, I have found some more parts to fix. The worst being this:

the front cross member also needs replacing, but isnt THAT bad.

how can I go about fixing the bit in th picture?? its completely detached (the other side is fine):bow

I would remove the rot and let in new metal, looks like you will need to do some welding, I wouldn't try to bodge it as the MOT tester will see all the fresh under-seal and have a prod, It needs doing right:)

My mot tester always remarks how well I look after my Maverick by hammeriting and undersealing it regually ;-)

Clivvy are you restoring it or selling it ?
If selling, I'd do the basic patch up for the MOT. They can't take bumper off to have a spy , so do a tidy up with hammerite or underseal. I'd have got an mot fail sheet first and just done what's on that. You never know what'll turn up :augie

still annoyingly undecided. im very changeable right now. To be honest, apart from this broken bit, its all looking pretty good underneath. I have removed both wings so far to fix them, but the rust on the arches is bad, and i have nothing rigid to bind any fibreglass to, so thats a pain.

at the moment, i figured id do some tidying up to try improve things a bit, i may change my mind again later. if i could get £500 for it as is, id probably take that, but i dont think i will, so i may as well do these repairs, MOT it, do whatever that needs if anything, then look at whether or not to sell because ill be able to set a better value on it. maybe.

Clive, what's the engine and running gear like, if all's OK, then repair it and keep it, keep your eyes skinned for new/better wings in the mean time.

If you are keeping it, don't do a bodge, make it strong again, I've been to some nasty RTC's involving vehicles that were bodged up in the bodywork dept and they crumple badly.

engine and running gear seem very strong, i have no issues there, and no, I promise i wont bodge it, this is why i havent done just that to sell it on or fool the MOT, and why i have gone ahead and taken the bumper and wings off.:thumbs i do like things to be right.

im going to get that broken bit welded, i thin ill have to remove the whiole front cross member and rad etc but thats no big deal.

Hi Clivvy from what I saw of it this moring it's all do-able mate. Personally I would fix it right as if it was sold on and someone had an accident that was made worse because of a bad repair I would be upset with myself if you know what I mean. My idea is to put it back together for now and run it until MOT runs out and then sorn it for a while to give you time to regroup finances and no pressure to fix it up nicely and then MOT it in spring. I'd even be tempted to buy my own little mini mig to do the welding myself. The body mount at the NS will probably be easier to fix or fabricate with the front panel removed because access looks a little difficult without doing this.

By the way thanks for letting me come over today and see how it all comes apart.

its a doddle to do and you dont have to take it off

but thats modern cars the terrano runs on 2 very big chassis members so a little bit of body at front thats abit weak wont cave in the terrano unlike a modern car which relies on the body for strength :thumbs

Richo, you don't happen to have a photo showing the rest of the body mount on the NS behind the plate you welded on do you. That's the bit that has rotted on Clivvy's.

yes, as JIm says, its the rear of that front cross member, the bit the bolt goes through to hold the bumper on that has actually broken on the N/S.

the rest isnt too bad TBH, in terms of the cross member, I just want to cut it off now while i can and make good, but its that n/s bit thats the problem...

very tempted to a little welder, but thats just more expense :/

yeah thats the one Richo...loosk like i need something like that!!

how long and how hard was it to do just that bit behind the front cross member?

If the body can rot so can the chassis, mate. I have seen a Range Rover nearly torn in 2 after it hit a small tree which was approx 9" thick, rot will weaken any vehicle, chassis or no chassis.

My last 2001 Terrano was getting quite rusty in the chassis area, that's one of the reasons I sold it, but I did put it through an MOT first to make sure I wasn't selling a pup.

We cut up quite a lot of vehicles when we are practicing extrication's and you would be amazed how a small amount of rot can weaken a vehicles strength

feck mine is way worse than that!!! i got a whole host of welding to do, none on chassis as far as i can see, but bodywork is a disgrace, if i could i'd take the body off & do it but i can't, got 2 bits near to body mount (one of which to reattach the blooming thing) & the other side at the front ain't too clever either so just gonna redo the whole front end, all wheel arches need done & rear seatbelt mounts!

absolutely. these 4x4's are very heavy and cumbersome, so the forces exerted during an accident are multiplied, and this is why the chassis and important body parts have to be strong, otherwise its just like tearing cardboard.:thumbs
