well, i stand corrected, i assumed that they needed a forward thrust to keep them engaged :thumb2
manuals, getting out a car in the rain, wind, sleet, snow incase you might get stuck, bit too barbaric for my liking. fixed hubs, flick a lever, carry on, flick a lever to disengage and carry on.. cracking. what if you need to steer before you get chance to reverse? those zombies will be thru the back window quicker than an illegal in a british lorry in calais!
anyway, we digress....

Auto hubs are locked once in 4WD as the power through the drive shafts keeps them in position even if you select 2WD they stop locked unless you reverse to disengage them:thumb2 Have driven some steep down hills Dead man's hill in the North Yorkshire Dales (Jim will know this one) where 1st 4L has to be used as it's that steep your butt lifts a foot off the seat but you can tell the front hubs were fully locked by steering feel:augie

I agree, my Autos remain locked once they are first locked of course, whether you go in 2 WD or 4WD, on slippery roads I change from 2 -4 -2 -4...as I drive along, provided that I don't roll back at any time.
I fitted a sensor on the front propshaft, and that never stops turning.
Never had any clunks or clicks and I have done this at high speeds too, ie well over 50 mph... where conditions allow of course.
I was at first sceptical, that's why I fitted the sensor.:thumb2

Hope it helps.
If in doubt, don't engage 4 high at speeds higher than walking pace.
In any case or scenario... never engage or disengage 4 low, unless stationary.

no snow this morning thankfully as I want to go work todaybut it was deffinatly snowing last night.
well more like snowy rain. but snow none the less.
2 years ago was the worst snowfall I can remember. I had to get a tractor to pull me out of a 7 foot drift.
5 years or so ago we were booked it to a caravan on the llyn peninsula on the last week in septemper.
first night we stayed it snowed like stink and then froze and stayed with us for most of winter.
were nearly in November now and it can come at anytime

my car doesn't even like slightly damp roads , so I dread to think what it will be like in snow

Kim says she needs some pictures as proof. She reckons you might be fibbing :naughty :lol

just for your good lady.this was taken on the top section of the lane where everyone(apart from me:augie)suffered some damage.
could only drive the top section as the drifts where too deep for me to get through.

this video was from a couple of weeks after going up monsal where I almost flipped it on the way up.quite scary at the time.

Me, pete and our mate stu did strata florida, drifts were about 4ft.

Got to the other end where the road was but could not get back via road, had to take the forestry.

problem was where the roads had been cleared most of the snow was dumped into the entrances to the lanes.
was an impressive bit of road with about 10 ft drifts which they had cut through with a jcb then it had froze so lt was a wall of ice each side of the road.

forgot to mention we were all on 34s and 35s. Rear diff locks.

The week before or after we got stuck on a lane in snow and snapped a 5t strap, Then started to thunder and lightning. We had to retreat

I had a rear wheel drive quad bike with 10"tyres on so didn't take much to lose traction:lol

no snow down where i am, we have had only one decent snowfall in 20years also its still warm just windy

keep your snow until November - when I tax my 4x4.:thumbs

I WANT snow, not coz I've got a Terrano, but as I am a heating engineer. Last winter was a flop here, not one flake of snow and hardly any breakdowns :doh

Bring it on this year :augie

I want snow!!!!! Me me me me me :lol

This was every morning with me for a while, 2011 winter I think.
Must admit, the little puddle jumper started up and drove right out every time.
