:eek::eek: we just got very high winds next doors front fence will prob be on the other side of the street in the morning as one side has been ripped off so far:lol (hate next door :augie)

But if snow hits the south the whole country will grind to a holt:doh think it should just snow in the North of the UK as it doesn't bother us & we just get on with it:lol

Too true..:thumb2
We also cope well in the Midlands too.:thumb2

I must be getting old cos I really don't want any snow:doh

There have been warnings of a bad winter with lots of snow and low temperatures but there are warnings every autumn of this isn't there.:nenau

Hey don't forget me, it's hilarious watching all the "Sunday City drivers" struggle in the snow :lol

I'm no super wizz driver but hey, it's great practise and also a load of fun too!

A couple of years back I was seeing how sideways I could go round a series of quiet roads :augie

I have my play area ready for the snow, it's an always empty car park with loads of room, :sly

Some people just use it as an excuse.
Not had any snow round here for a good few years worth talking about.
Last time we had a decent amount I went out in the peaks on the quad bike.
Most of the lanes where blocked but I had fun trying :thumb2

Kim says she needs some pictures as proof. She reckons you might be fibbing :naughty :lol

In reality, you have to play in the snow, so when you get into a real skid, you just turn the wheel in the right direction through instinct, rather than thinking about it. If you have to think about it... it's too late.

I practice in 2 wheel drive, see what it will do, and then try it in 4 wheel drive and see how much better it is.

Caution: 4 wheel drive gives you better traction to get away quicker at the traffic lights on ice and snow, but it won't stop you any quicker than a normal car. Watch out for transmission wind up as the road surface improves.

i drove thru sutton park this afternoon and it was a total leaf out! just leaves in every direction, proper sticking to the windscreen too... bit of hale, no snow :(

Cheers Rustic :thumb2

I learnt all this with my old frontera but still a freshman in the world of 4wd really, yeah I've done a few pay n plays n lots of laining so I know about slow speed stuff, but yeah it's exactly what I did with the old frontera, drifting in 2 and 4wd and also trying to drift in my old mk2 mr2 .... :doh

Might as well have been drifting a shopping trolley (more control) :lol

wont the fixed hubs offer some more engine braking than the auto/manual hubs as they are in constant connection with the transfer box when 4wd is engaged, like when going down hill in mud etc?

Ooh I like that thinking :naughty isn't it disconnected before this though? :nenau

Wouldnt of thought that it would make much difference. Manuals when locked are fixed hubs so no difference. Once a auto hubs is locked it too becomes fixed but does it actually unlock at times? That was discussed years ago on here. I reckon theres got to be times when theyve unlocked themselves but no idea if it makes much difference to engine braking or not.

I used to own a modded ford capri driving that in the snow was a huge learning curve even on straight roads it went side ways:lol:doh In 2008 was up in Kielder forest with an old member & very good friend Cosmic when we got hit by a white out:doh TBH coped fine in 2WD 90% of the time until we hit a steep hill & my T2 just started going sideways:lol put it in 4WD & flew up the hill. Cosmic had to drive on the wrong side off the road most of the way from Kielder Forest up to the top of Carter Bar (English/Scottish Border) to get past all of the stuck lorries. When he got to the top of Carter Bar there was PC plod parked up in his T2 & gave Cosmic the thumbs up:lol I had to head the other direction home through Otterbun which is very high up & open (MOD train around this area) but managed ok in just 2WD 98% of the time coming home:thumb2

autos will surely feel braking from the disk and release power/connection?, manual, after you get in from the wet and hope that you did remember to service them that week, will be fixed, like fixed hubs but not as good. engine speed and drag is a good brake, especially in low range..

Have to say manual hubs in my experience are far better than fixed hubs. Ive not been caught out wanting 4wd and hubs not locked because I think ahead amd lock them when I think I may need 4wd. Leave unlocked rest of the time so less wear and tear and bettter mpg. Best of both worlds.

I dont know for sure about autos but surely unless you let the wheels go in opposite direction theyll remain locked? Have to say tho life far too short to worry about that.

Auto hubs are locked once in 4WD as the power through the drive shafts keeps them in position even if you select 2WD they stop locked unless you reverse to disengage them:thumb2 Have driven some steep down hills Dead man's hill in the North Yorkshire Dales (Jim will know this one) where 1st 4L has to be used as it's that steep your butt lifts a foot off the seat but you can tell the front hubs were fully locked by steering feel:augie
