according to nissan t2 handbook says tyre should be matched in same diameter etc.
But mentions snow chains can be used on rear wheels only.

currently running general at2s from general on all 4 wheels.

spare is just legal, not an at2 and also have another steel rim with likely illegal tread.

thinking stick some new mudders on them of 235/75x15 as per.

for laning work/play only. after all there are tractors with 4wd and different size
wheels and tread patterns, and would be same across a given axle.

in time takes to fit chains could almost swap from at to mt, the mt's would work
better with more aggresive pattern, lsd and live axle.

thoughts as ever appreciated.

No contest ..chains rule:D
Been out playing this week on muds "Insa Turbo" but if the snow wont squash! you're stuffed:eek:
However with my dodgey old steels and old transit chains bobs your fanny:thumbs
Only takes a few minutes really to slap the chains on;)
Used old rope on my daughters golf in the snow and that worked(for a while), fine to get you out of trouble:cool:
When we went skiing last year we had a week on chains on the transit and thats the worst for back end grip in the slip:eek:

Tractors have their gear ratios be it in the transfer or the diffs set so they rotate at the correct speeds.

Similarly some (UK I think) subaru's have 1:1 transfer to one axle and 1:1.1 to the other, but the diffs are different.

I've noticed Nissan state to only fit chains to the front:confused:as you really need them on the front to boost the braking & steering. To only reason I can think they have stated to use the rear only is perhaps they may catch on the mudflaps & front bumper:confused:

well thats what i wondered as my at2s are coming upto 3 years old and whilst not worn
out are certainly worn some, then muds look chunkier when new but surely if air down
off road and only go 4wd when slippy shouldnt be too much of a prob, just thinking
cheaper than 4 muds for now plus dont need all time as at2s very good anyway.

recall having some pretty aggresive remould m+s on my escort aad sierra, certainly
taller off the car than road tyres, oh and change over time quicker. likely come into
own and pay/play centres as not looking for really rough GLs anyway and certainly got
thru all of local Derbyshire lanes on the at2s, though sure lsd helped.

further is it feasible, or where would i get bracket or long studs to allow carrying of 2
spares on rear mount, dually style as twin wheeler trucks/buses?

As you say you should be ok if you only use 4x4 when its needed - ie when its slippy, though of course you're then forcing 2 wheels to turn at different speeds so you imeadiately loose some of the grip you've gained.

Its feasable - not sure how long the rear door will last. I'm putting a 2nd spare on the roof for the Mac 4x4 Challenge - did think about 2 on back door either tandem as yousuggest or side by side somehow.

if i reduce the rolling radius of taller mud tyres based on being the same spec ie 235/75s
will that not balance, also rears will gain bigger foot print. thinking along lines of some
kumbo 71s which i gather i quite soft/pliable sidewalls. if doesnt work then can get 2
more for tthe front as was toying with going muds full time as truck seems happiest at
around max of 60-70 mph anyway, typically about same speed would be pulling the 'van
so road noise wouldn't be as bigger issue.

As for chains v Muds

On SNOW chains win. In the Alps they wont let you up in winter if you have no chains no mater what tyres you have, and if its snowing there are police to make you put them on

The French mountain cops wont let you put any chains on the front unless the car is only front wheel drive or you have 2 sets of chains.

Have a set of snow chains to fit t2 16" with At2 fitted I Will have to get them out and put them on the site as Patrol has 17" rims
