Snorkel and other stuff

Just for the fun of the debate.

If you fit a snorkel and drive through water deeper than the usual air intake level you can't suck water into the engine. But wht about all the other issues water can create, examples below.

Shorting out, starter, battery etc?

damage to fan, water pump ?

gearbox?

transfer box?

diff front?

diff rear?

ECU?

your thoughts and experiences on this please :thumbs

In nearly 2 years Dirty Frog has done plenty of water ( very deep & above the wing mirrors ) & completely drowned


NO DAMAGE done what so ever


All you need to do is change the oil & filters regular ( i do mine every 3 months ) & make sure the air filter box is completely water tight :thumbs

deepest drop into water/river and out the other side was above the wing mirrors. drove through ok

went through a lake behind a tricked up 90 at speed. he was deep mine just floated across. but only just. it was going down towards the end
hit the lake at about 40, up to no good at the time and was the only way out :augie

obviously if its all running and your not sinking and stuck it will dry out as you continue with your journey

the key is not to stay in the water too long ecu is inside . if you dont hang about it dont come in

i wouldn't recommend the floating option to anyone . so the minimum air in tyres is best

If you are going to do water with the later intercooled & ecu model then possibly move your ecu

I have driven through water that was lapping over the edge of the bonet with no snorkel and had no problems.

The problem i have fond with letting air out of the tyres is - tyre damage!

Sidewalls are more prone to damage with less pressure inside.

I used to run them at about 26 psi off road and 30 on. With soft tyres i once wrecked 3 tyres in a day. With 30 PSI i have never noticed the difference in traction and have not damaged one!

I am a tight git and don't like breaking stuff!

Depends what tyres to damage the tyre walls but thats going off topic :augie :lol

when i went wading i was feet on seet looking anxiously at ecu on top tranmission tunnel under yer centre consol,that would be nasty frying that mate had td5 and ecu under seat so they fitted tuperware tub full silicone round it. my alarm imboliser was in the traiangle by pedal it got fried and i had to get my mate to tow me home in his worrier

totally different ball game with water.

forget traction and all ground rules, with water air = buoyancy / floating and that is the one thing you dont want. especially in rivers so the least air is best. remembering you still have to continue your drive later

if your floating you have no drive or control
see recent post on ozz floods and they didnt have 33" tyres on

I've only had starter motor problems with regards electrics
Even then for the odd dip you'll be fine. Nissan seem to have done a fine job on all the elecs, as they've got waterproof sockets everywhere, even the lights have little snorkels:thumbs
The ecu is about level with the under side of the radio on mine, so well away from the water(unless you do an Adz). I've been in to top of bonnet deep and no water comes in the cab, which is actually a problem 'cause you end up doing a Colin and floating about That means reduced traction on the bottom, but with my boating skills, I get by
You should really raise the breather pipes to do a proper job if you're going to snorkel it, as std they go to bulkhead level:thumb2

& i've renoved all my gromits so yes water comes in but it (A) keeps traction & (B) gets out again :thumbs

Put my breathers through the bulk head with the snorkel :thumbs

That can be improved on by careful speed in the water by maintaining a good bow wave at bottom of bonnet level
So the air intake(behind the wing) is in the void behind the bow wave

So why don't you need a snorkel on the exhaust coz water can be ingested that way to cant it.

My point is though at that depth you can prob drive into the water and stop with no problems, but what electronic gizmo's are Nissan thinking about when there saying dont go any deeper????

Many moons ago in my younger years I decided to give my engine bay a good jetwashing after a day at Langdale :doh (on a MKIII) got it nice and clean but made it run like a pig immediatlyafterwards!!! :lol
Leaving it running on tick over for half an hour dried everything out and ran fine after!!! :clap
