So I'm back and so I thought it only proper to show you a new mod I'm doing :sly
A couple of weeks back I trashed the front indicators AGAIN  one of the trials of offroading a road going Trol. As I have to buy these lights from Latvia or somewhere, I decided it was time to go LED :thumbs
Here's the damage , both wings cuffed, both indicators trashed

The other side's just the same and you'll also note that the grill is broken after some extreme snow bashing last month.

So time to get it sorted and glass fibre it for some local repair strength.
Cleaned up the mud and cracks then clamped and tied it all ready for glass :)

Looks heath robinson but worked a treat . You'll see here I've also glassed up the old indicator holes :sly

I just taped a bit of card board to the hole and slapped on the glass.

Here's the other side after a quick clean up, ready for a 1st fill. I'm using glass fibre filler for extra strength.

Now you get the feel of the final shape now it's filled a bit more.

Here's the LED units I'm fitting. They're side and indicator ones. Water proof too.

Next a quick template out of some cereal box and the wife's chopping board. I got a rollocking last time for using the table :augie

Marked out the position I wanted and cut 2 holes to start the cuts from.

Jig sawed the rest out to the size of the template

Then a little filing and a trial fit :clap

Next some ordinary filler to smooooooth things out and get ready for paint.

A quick spray up of any old porsche metalic , just to see where else needs filling and sanding.

Finally today, here's the LED in situ :naughty

Need some more filler so I'll do that tomorrow night and try for some top coat :thumb2
Watch this space

Just been pervin on you PB pics, Nice mod.

You might aswell think about making a custom front/challenge wing setup. :naughty

Can you not get metal light suround/grills? Then you won't keep breaking it when 4x4ing:thumb2

Aye, I have this going through my mind constantly, I was thinking tack the front panel in place with a couple of thin bits of angle off the bulkhead temporary, then Just cut the inner wings out, and take it from there get the tube bent and welded in and top it with checker plate

Got any links as to what you're on about .
I'm doing exo cage eventually :augie
Have you done with that pipe bender yet :lol

wow that is a lot of work for a couple of bits of plastic and lenses, you really need to get some heavy protection round those vulnerable bits, and I am sure you can manage that without thinking to much about it, Rick

After sardinia I am going to be using it, Need to get a tube notcher too.

Something like this, But you could also fit the grill and lights in differently etc

sadly not mine but it's the direction I want to head in I think.

Aswell as upgrading the axles with stronger internals and CVs, But thats a long way in the future.

Or maybe a patrol ;)

I know but I'm a closet custom monkey at heart :sly
Exo cage will do it eventually :thumbs

Nice job of them lights:thumb2. Think I need to accidently damage my front end:augie

Got the final filler and sand done , mainly :lol
Primed it with a couple of good coats and so ready for a flat back and then paint it all black mmmm :naughty

Getting there

With these lights, are they "E" approved, as you might have an issue at MOT time, especially if you have a keen inspector?:doh

With all these LED lamp replacements, has anybody actually checked to see if these lights in say stop lights are legal with the original fitting?

I doubt it, so does anybody know the legalities of retro fit LED lamps?

OK new cars have LED's as standard fit, and some lorries and buses, but these modules are approved with the light fitting as fitted from new.
Is this a can of worms waiting to be opened? :doh

Just a thought...

Yep they are E marked and legal. Many truck lights these days are direct replacements for the old bulb type and the LEDs are often dual voltage 12/24
I don't actually know the whole can of worms but my friend has replaced all his lights including the headlights. No issues with mot :D

There are some cheap LED lamps that "look " the same as they have the same base fitting, and they do not have the same light output as the original bulbs.

Also the appearance of the LED is not the same as a point source from a filiament lamp, so the LED, which can be multiple directional sources, may not give out the correct output for the lenses.

I say this as I have changed some interior lights on my boat, and they appear brighter, but don't illuminate the same area as the original filiament bulbs.
