Hi, I have a terrano Salomon 1998 and no matter how long a run I do or how much power is in the battery, every morning is a difficulty in starting, sometimes flattening the battery in the process, it is also so sluggish on turning over, I have replaced the battery but the problem still persists. Can anyone suggest other alternatives or remedies please.

does the new battery go flat with general use or does it go flat with bad starting?

Have you checked your your glowplugs??just a thought

Thanks cosmic, no I haven't checked the glow plugs, false security I suppose, it started easily enough when warm, but I will check them tomorrow, thanks.

Thanks t-jay, the new battery goes dead on trying to start, I don't think that I have a discharge, other than the alarm, this procedure of starting is now weaking the new battery, thanks and good luck.

if not sure take to a auto electrician and get a load test i did and found my new battery was duff got another new one exchanged and alls ok

these motors do take a high load to start and with the recent bad weather we had dark nights etc batteries take quite a hammering with heaters demister etc and depends on how far you travel in a single journey also has an effect on charging

i had a very similar problem before christmas..........it turned out to be the alternator. i found out after my battery went flat and buying a new battery and that one going flat too :x starts ok now

I've been told that if you run down a modern car battery that it will permanantly loose 10-15% of its punch.

Not sure of the science behind this though or its veracity.

Hi Mistralmac, it depends on the condition of the battery to start with. It can kill batteries alltogether. So yes 10 to 15% atleast I would say.

could just be a lazy starter motor, i replaced mine and it did start over much faster. also check the battery terminals as per workshop download.

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions, I have tried the majority with no luck, so I smothered everywhere in WD40 and now it starts ok, but is this goodfortune or the recent milder weather LOL, I guess i'll have to wait for another cold snap before I know.
Once again thanks to you all, perhaps I can return the favour one day.
