Hi whilst checking the brake pad wear on my 03 3.0d and freeing of the caliper sliders i found i have about 0.5 to 1mm play if rocking the disc from top to bottom on the pasenger side
The car has done 38,000 miles would this be the brake rings or bearings it does not make a noise when driving.

Has your's def got Auto locking hubs to have brake rings? you may find yours has fixed hubs being a 3litre model. Have to say though I'd be more inclined to think wheel bearing, probably be able to adjust em up:thumbs

The play is probably a bit more obvious when you rock the entire wheel (when jacked up obviously) as opposed to just the brake disk, but sounds like not enough to get too worried about......I think it needs the wheel bearing tightened up is all - check out the manual link.

Not sure what you meant by 'brake rings' though?

Hi LACROUPADE, you need to adjust your wheel bearing up a tad by the looks of it. Easy enough to do, take the free wheeling hub off and you will see a circlip holding a backplate in position. remove then you can get at the lock plate on the wheel nut. Take the two small screws out and adjust the nut up. ONLY LIGHT PRESSURE NEEDED. A very slight amount of play is better than too tight. I chucked a half a cup of gear oil in the auto hub before putting it back on as someone on here suggested. Teebird.

Sorry that reply was meant for ADY. Check the free play with the wheel on.Teebird

Hi all thanks for help will adjust bearings saturday morning and it does have fixed hubs .:doh

LOL but having said that, I might have the same issue....I recall it was an advisory at last MoT but only as a very minor one....but I notice that I get a low frequency vibration that isn't wheel balance WHEN 4WD IS ENGAGED (between about 40-50mph) - in 2WD its fine.

But I've got fixed hubs on mine (MkIV) - I wonder if bearing adjustment is therefore any different??

Will find out in the morning can,t see it being that much different but will post up once i have done the work.

Well done the bearings and its a easy job
Remove the black knock on cap
Then remove circlip.
Undo the 6 off 13 nuts and remove casing from hub .
Then its the same as the locking hub .
Also just had new tyres fitted and the steering felt unbalanced found the problem lumps of mud from my last off road trip cleaned up and no wheel wobble .
Better clean it better next time :lol
