Hi, all. On my 1997 Terrano, the slide control which moves the hot/cold air from windscreen to footwell etc. appears to be broken. it just slides about and although it won't actually fall out, it feels very loose [after being very stiff]
how difficult will it be to investigate this problem? i am not very mechanically minded but, my son is quite handy.......the cd manual which I have only shows air con controls, which I don't have...

Sounds like your dash will be same as mine. 4 Screws underneath top edge of the centre panel and another two further down, think I had to remove the ash tray. Once the centre panel is removed the heater controls are in a single unit that again is held in with 4 screws.

I think yours is an R20 :thumbs
Also, as said before , it's only 4 screws to get at the controls :D

thanks, I'll have a look tomorrow.....where in west wales are you? I was born and bred in St David's.

Most defnitely an R20 and its just a Bowden cable come undone - common and easily fixed.

hopefully! When I go into my service manual [for an R20] I can only find the air con controls in the heating section? Am I missing something/ Told you I wasn't very mechanically minded!

I wouldn't worry - just remove the front part of the console...its only a few screws as Pete says...and it should all be clearly visible.

I think from memory you have to pull off the actual knob from the heater lever first though, because the fascia comes away leaving the controls and levers visible....not sure if theres a grub screw accessed from underneath to hold it in place? Its been so long LOL :thumbs

Just to clarify, the online manual is the same as the cd versions that I've seen. The manuals are for the 2001 onwards model so there are some differences. The "R20" denotes Terrano 2 which ran from 1993 to the very last models sold in 2006, the "R20" is roughly in the middle of your chassis number. R20 doesn't define it's year or marque.

If yours is the pre 2001 version with slider controls it will have subtle differences to the manual but the main mechanicals are similar other than the pre intercooler which wasn't as electronic as later models.

Try removing the centre panel that surrounds the radio, heater controls and also houses the heated rear screen and hazzard switches. Get your head down by the gear lever and look up to reveal the 4 screws.

ok, thanks all. was too dark when I got home tonight but will have a look tomorrow. Sounds easy enough................

well, managed to get a look at the controls today as I was rained off at work.........
took the ashtray out and undid the 2 screws then took out the other 2 screws at the top. pulled out fascia and removed electrical connections then set aside. Had to remove the radio as I could see nothing further. Having done this, I could clearly see the problem. The arm controlling the cable had 'jumped' off its pivot due to 2 small retaining arms having broken off. No way to repair this. Only way to get around it would be to place a screw and washer over the top to stop the arm jumping off again but, I can't get at it! Anyway, by greasing the cable where it enters the sheathing, I can now move the arm back and forth without it jumping off again [if I'm careful and do it slowly!] At least i now know what the problem is.

i will try and post a pic but I've never done that before...............hope it is self explanatory.

here's a better one as it shows the cable in the background. The arm moves left and right and controls where you have the flow of air ie. windscreen, footwell or face. The were 2 clips holding the arm down tight on its pivot and they had broken off.

There's someone on here got a thread running as he is breaking two trucks. Might be having a look and seeing if he has a replacement.

thanks, Jim. Only thing is, it looks like an absolute nightmare to replace! I'm not man enough for the job.....my patience level is zero when it comes to working on vehicles......
