Has anyone had anything to do with Skoda Roomster's?

sort of ..... I looked at one before I got " Florence " ...... looked ok , but Florence has much more room for my chair , originally I went to look at a skoda yeti , but the advance payment was silly .

I was following a green one yesterday into work, on Leeds road. The driver seemed happy, and his driving was calm and collected. Other than that not much, but have read plenty of good reviews, they seem to be a decent motor though I wouldn't have one (because ive seen way better out there for that money)

Think you need to test one before you commit, and if you can, main manufacturer warranty is a must, or atleast, proper dealer extended warranty, not a joe bloggs version :thumb2

Otherwise if you run into issues, it can be hugely expensive with all these ECU's and modules ect

We are looking for a suitable car to replace the Xsara Picasso...BUT it must do over 50 mpg .. We have looked at the Yeti, 2 wheel drive version, but doing research, it appears that Skoda are having major paint problems with the Yeti.
Paint bubbling on the doors and sills, all within the first two years of manufacture. These panels supposed to be galvanised...:doh
Skoda have a three year warranty, and are claiming that stone chips are causing the initial damage... when pushed... ie threatened with legal action...they do the repaint under warranty, however at 3 years and a few months on, and the paint bubbling appears again and Skoda say... " Not our problem.. it's out of warranty...:augie

What happened to "fit for purpose" shouldn't a car last longer than this?
For example... my Mav is over 19 years old with no rust or bubbling on the doors or sills, or anywhere else for that matter, and neither has our 9 year old Picasso.

On investigating, Skoda have similar issues with some other models too.:doh

Add also the problem with DMF (Dual Mass Flywheels) that VW group and other manufacturers have, some last only 30k miles, yet some can do 80 k...
Either way you end up with a bill £1500 or so...

We also looked at the C4 Picasso, but like similar cars, eg Zafira etc, the foot print of the cars are getting bigger, ie longer, and wider, and we also looked at the Peugeot 3008 SUV, but that is 7 feet wide across the mirrors... So to fit it into our garage we will have to fold the mirrors in BUT when reversing it out, you need the mirrors to see behind you to save hitting the wall at the side of the property.

We also looked at the Cmax, but that seems outdated, however there is a new one out soon, but we are reluctant to buy a "new model" as there will be no non OEM parts available, like exhausts etc.
We found out the hard way, when we bought a new MkIII escort in 1981 at 13 months old, the alternator went, and being a new model, there were no service exchanges available...:doh:doh:doh

So we might do a test drive on the C4 Picasso, and see if it can go into the garage...

Are there any other cars, that can give over 50 mpg, very reliable, a minimum of 12,000 miles between services, that don't cost the earth to maintain?
We like the higher driving position of the Picasso, so an SUV type is essential.

We looked at the Peugeot 2008 but my wife hit her head on the roof when getting in, and we are rubbing shoulders when we are both sat in the front.:doh

We thought about Nissan Quash.. thingy, then thought too many Renault parts, so they are a non starter, so Renault Scenic also out.


Not looked at Kias, or Toyotas or Hyundais yet...

Any other contenders?

We had a C3 Picasso that regularly did 56 to 62 mpg, plenty of room (I'm not small) and a nice high driving position.
1.6 diesel.:thumbs

Rustic my parents have been getting over 50 MPG from the Mondeo & Foocus 2L TDCI's (auto's) they have had & the Mondeo estate boot makes the T2's look like a mini's:lol TBH if we hadn't of found this T2 I was going to get a Mondeo as one of the best tow cars around:thumbs
The new VW engines are weak & nothing like they used to make:doh mates with VW's or Skoda's mainly the 2.0TDI engines are all complaining at the amount it's costing to keep fixing them & want shot of their cars:augie

I think for the last few years manufacturers have come up with all kinds of inovations such as the dual mass fly wheels and electronic everything, sadly we cant get away from this "progress". So not a lot that we can do about ecu's and fancy fly wheels. So far I've not seen anything bad about the roomster. I looked at them and qashqia earlier this year and the qashqia is by far the better looking but lacking in interior space and practicality. The Roomster is butt ugly without a doubt but everything else seems right for my purposes. In the next few months I'll have to trade one of the Terranos in as we can't afford the fuel that I use. Have been looking at the 1.4 & 1.6 diesels tho not ruled out the 1.2tsi petrol, much as the 1.2 diesel would be nice it'll be out of our price range.

I think modern cars are a compromise.

" Florence " does 66.6 mpg on a run ( to Norfolk ) , and averages 43 mpg around here , but its very hilly here ..... I live around 900ft above sea level and Florence copes with the hills very well :thumb2

I have friends who use a Skoda Roomster, very happy with it. Regularly need to drive around with 3 labradors, on some of the worst roads in Belgium (which means a lot!). Bought second hand, never had an issue. I never heard anything about bubbling paint...

I drove a Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI for three years as company car. Not a speed monster, but very comfortable, silent, roomy. 6000 km in 2 weeks, Belgium-Romania and back, with a lot of driving in Romania: 56 mpg, without specific attention to eco driving, and with 2 different drivers. 2 people, luggage for three weeks + gifts for the in-laws, and an adult labrador in the back.
If I were to buy another car for road use only, choice would be between the superb break and the new seat leon break - but with one of the new 2.0 diesels, for some more power.
