can someone please advise me how to view the technical section of the site. Im having problems with my '03 3.0t grsve and need advise. I have tried to view the technical section but to no avail.

As I have said, I have an '03 3.0td patrol grsve. Its currnetly with a turbo specialist here in N.I. I have just been told it needs a new turbo, and some other 'bits'? Im waiting on them getting back to me with a price :confused:

please start by giving explanations to problems symptoms etc to give them something to work on

you can do it here or start a new thread in the troll sections. the moderators will help move stuff about from thread to thread till you find your feet.

The guys have just rang me. Unfortunately they reckon the turbo is shot. With a complete engine flush, full service, which by the sounds of it was the cause of the turbo going in the first place, the cost of the new turbo all in it works out at £1100+VAT.
They reckon the car hasnt been serviced properly the last couple of times it has went in, add to that a very low standard oil being used and heh presto!!

well this sounds very unfortunate, sorry to read about this Ivan. i know its all a bit late now but, what were the problems? im surprised to hear some shoddy servicing has blown your turbo, doesnt make sense to me. some cars hardly ever get serviced, and live long and prosperous lives, ive never heard of poor servciing blowing the turbo, but them im no mechanic. has the garage explained HOW this could be? for that sort of money, id be liking to know how they came to this rather expensive conclusion, and if its driveable, ask them to put it all back and drive home for a second opinion, but thats just me.

A short story now follows.

Last Sunday evening my family and i were making our way to the airport to catch a plane to turkey for our annual pilgrimage to the sun. we got within 3 miles of the airport when there was a loud wheezing/spinning/whirring (delete where applicable) noise coming from the engine. I pulled in at the next filling station to investgate further. The noise was indeed coming from the turbo, the more revs, the worse the noise became. I podded on, slowly to the carpark of the airport, parked the car, shuttled to airport, then on to our final destination for the week. on return from our hols we went to pick up the car, the noise was still present. so instead of moving it, we called the RAC. The RAC guy confirmed it was the turbo. a lowloader was sent for to ferry my stricken 4X4 to my home. they felt it might not be too bad owing to the fact that it started, and didnt smoke. I then contacted our nearest turbo specialist who advised me to remain under 2.5k revs to get the car to them. while I was there they removed the main air hose from the box leading to the turbo, at the turbo end to reveal a black smoke, coming out in an erratic manner, this they said was not right and was down to a badly coked/choked/clogged engine which had caused a shaft in the turbo to snap. Hence I now find myself in the predicament where they have the broken turbo out, and one on order. while this is happening they are flushing the C**P out of the engine and replacing all filters and new oil etc.. At this point I must also add that I recently (6 months ago) used around £65 of BIO diesel in the car, which in turn lead to my injectors requiring removal and refurbishment. Oh, and dont get me started about the dual mass fly wheel!! Its certainly been an interesting, and expensive year of motoring in my Nissan Patrol 3.0td GRSVE!!
 
I would also add, that when a neighbour had a bit of a look before I limed over to the turbo chaps, the main hose to/from the turbo and air box was very slack. we were able to pull it off without loosening the jubilee clip holding it on. The noise is, they say the shaft broken....

before i was ill i had a tuned saab 9000 2.3 turbo ..... it cost me £600 fitted for the turbo...but that was a few years ago , shouldnt have gone up that much surely ? :nenau
 
Im told that this is for the Turbo, the engine flush, the service, and labour, its not £1100 for the turbo on its own...

Still big money for a medium-sized job Ivan - must be your turbo is monstrously bigger than the Ts which can be had for a lot less money..but I'd be worrying about what made it go in the first place......high mileage? low oil? thrashed and turned off too soon?

Re your comment about bio further up, there is a confusion of terms - if it was 100% straight bio, i.e. diesel derived solely from a product like vegetable oil, then because of the additives and stuff used to process it, its renowned for stripping out all the gunk and crud the first time its used....often requires a filter change as a result....your system must have been badly gunged up for it to bollox the injectors as well....but once that first flush is done, the system is clean and you can use as much as you like thereafter.

normal 'bio' diesel, i.e. mainstream petrol forecourt stuff where its normal diesel with up to 30% bio-diesel (but from a major petro-chemical manufacturer not a backstreet still!!) does not have this effect - its very widely used on the continent and actually runs much better than UK diesel.

Add to that the fact Northern Ireland in comparison to England is extremely small and cut off by water, there are only a handful of turbo specialists here, and only one close enough for me to get my car to them. Any parts required will always have to be ordered from 'across the water' adding more to the costs by way of shipping. The BIO fuel was bought at a small independent filling station, I knew something was wrong when I couldnt see anything in my rear view mirror only smoke, I managed to limp it to a mechanic who told me a few days later that it was indeed the bad fuel that had caused the problem. When you smelt the fuel after the surplus had been removed it smelt exactly the same as emulsion paint that had gone off...

Clearly home produced and probably from used ship fat....Google the way its made, the chemicals used are what does the gunge stripping....its fine if its properly made and you've done that first filter change, but always risky if an unknown source.

Try Milners Offroad, or there are other outfits over here (Allard I think is one?) that are turbo manfacturers and might do the right kit...if you find something at the right price at last it reduces the bill to labour only....but it doesn't need to be a turbo specialist your end....its just a big exhaust-powered fan at the end of the day and as common as muck, not like they are setting up a bespoke install.....did you check what your local Nisan dealer would have charged? Or indeed any competent garage...? Its not a specialist subject these days especially on big diesels...
