Hi John, no it's not just you. We have had to disable that section as the code is not compliant with the current versions of software that the new server runs.Hi BAT 21,
Sorry to be a pain, but I'm having problems accessing the 'home' section of the forum, I just seem to access the whole list of sections etc.......is it me, the gremlins or because there's a T in the day of week.....?

I haven't been able to get on this site until today, is that the same as everyone or just me??
OK I give in WTF is a server anyway is it a hard drive or something more complicated ?
No Geek Speak please.
Me too but others seemed to be able to get on as of yesterday, something to do with old links, anyway mine just started working, odd thing is throughout most of the down time I got as far as the picture sequence and only after clicking "enter forums" did it go wrong, I put this down to my system storing this part of the startup, but could be wrong, Rick
In very basic terms, a server is just a very powerful computer that lives somewhere in the world, and is connected to the internet. Normally they are located in huge temperature controlled rooms, in places that have a very good power supply, often from multiple substations, so there is very little chance of a power cut, and often as close to multiple telephone exchanges so if one should go down, others can still allow people to connect to these Servers. These places are often referred to as "Server Farms", as they will house literally hundreds/thousands of Servers, and most servers will have more than one website loaded up onto them.
Whereever you are in the world, when you type in the name of a web site, your Internet service provider (ISP), BT, AOL, Virgin, EE, O2 etc, will look up that website on their own computer, which they call a "Name Server". The Name Server will then tell your own computer exactly where the computer holding the website you want to get to is located, and supply directions on how to get it. There are thousands of Name Server computers out there, many companies even have their own ones in house, and each night they are updated with any changes. Because of this, if you move a Website to a new server, it can take up to 48 hours for all the local Name Servers to be told of this move and the new directions, which is one of the reasons why some people can connect, and others cant, it all depends on how quick their nearest name server is told of the changes.
On top of that, your own computer, to save keep having to ask your ISP's Name Server, for directions to the site every time you type it in, will often keep a local "Cached" copy of directions to all the sites you regularly go to. Your own computer makes a decision each time you connect to a site, and if you go there a lot, and the directions never change, it will decide it needs to check less and less often with your ISP for new directions, so often it can take up to 10 days for this set of Cached directions to actually change to the new ones.
So basically if you need to move a popular site from an old out of date server (computer) to a new faster, and better newer Server (Computer) it can take 2 days for the internet to know it has moved, and maybe another 10 days for your own computer to catch up.
As I say this is very very simplified, as there are so many other things than have an impact, but I hope it helps.
Thanks for that I now have a basic concept in my head.
With my brain wiring I might not be able to find the brain cell where I stored it next time I need it ! lol
