Single wire air horn

Hi guys

My horn is rubbish.
I want to install a 12 volt air horn, very loud, onto the existing single wire 12 volt feed and the earth connection (created by the horn body bolted onto the structure of the car).
Iv seen some on eBay etc, but they don't seem very loud.
Who out there has a cracker and where did it come from??

Ive got a twin air horn on mine but ive wired it through a relay to the battery using the existing horn wire for the trigger. Its mounted just behind the grille and is silly loud, You wont be able to use the normal horn feed for the compressor as the current draw will be to much for the circuit.

Air Horns

As has been said I would use the existing horn wiring to operate a standard 30 amp 4 pin relay and wire up a fused feed direct from the battery.

Our old Santa Fe had an air horn fitted it was a triple horn unit with pipework connected to give a none musical blast. As it was all mounted under the bonnet it was not as loud as I would have liked. It really needed to be mounted behind the front grille but never did get round to moving it before she was written off.

TBH all the cheap air horns are not that loud in reality unless you buy a decent compressor. Back in the 1960's I had a Fiamm that played Colonel Bogey before they became illegal.

Unless used regularly the mechanism would seize up so it would need stripping down every 18 months or so. It moved vehicles with me several times before I got fed up of it seizing up so let it go with the vehicle sale.

I have a Hadley air horn 3ft long needs 100 psi air, best roof mounted used to run it from a propane gas bottle with a spark igniter very very loud with big flame as well, many a pedestrian that was not looking stepping out in front reeled in absolute fright, happy days, Rick

Rick, I would love to see that these days with all the kids and their headphones in walking out now thats what i call pedestrian control...

I fitted a Stebel Nautilus to my first Transit some years ago, it's a compact airhorn, very easy to fit, plenty loud enough to get noticed. I really should fit one to the Sprinter.

I have one of these "Twin tone compact air horns" which is a tight squeeze, but just about fits between the grill and the radiator facing forward.

I wired it up with a relay as the others have said, but left the normal horns connected as well, as air horns do have a bit of a time delay, where as the "Beep Beep" road runner horns fitted are instant.

The first time I had to use them was on the motorway when an Artic tried to come into our lane in the queue for the Dartford Crossing... It had the desired effect on the Lorry, and Suz jumped out of her skin, and asked me why the lorry had hooted at us.. I told her that what she had heard was our horn... very impressed.

My dad used to drive HGV's back in the day and on his Scania he had a train horn fitted that used to run from the air lines.

It was bloody awesome, he had it fitted before I was born and I never did see the actual horn itself but my god was it loud.
