Has anyone got a photo of the sills with the outer sill removed please.

Just wanted to see what I’m letting myself in for. Thinking about replacing inner sills too but a bit worried about body dropping if I remove inner sills from back of body mountings.

Have not got a pic but it is quite complicated as there are three parts, inner centre and outer, Rick

There should be some on my project thread Jim, not sure how good they are or how useful you will find them

The body mounts on the sills are also attached to the under side of the body so you can cut out the inner sill without fear of the body dropping.
Replaced mine a couple of years back with no issues.

Thanks guys for the info.
Tdoug looked at your thread and seen the photos mate ta.
Elty spot on mate that advice has made me a bit more comfortable doing the job.

Still planning what I’m going to do but I want to get it done before winter. The outer sills have been poorly patched previously and then to get it through the test in January the garage poorly patched on top of the already poor repairs. So basically the rear 16” or so need cutting out and replacing but I’m wondering if I should do the whole outer sill. Once I’ve cut out either the section or or whole sill I’ll see what the inner sills are like. Also looking at tdougs thread the stainless option to repair sounds attractive as it’ll not need revisiting again but then again if I use thick enough mild steel and protect it’ll still last for several years.

Will be watching this thread with interest Jim as I will have the same work to carry out in the Maverick when Terrance is back on the road.

Not be starting until mid September as I’ve got quite a lot on at the moment but gives me chance to plan. Will probably either post on here or even resarect the project thread and start populating the photos again. Pity you don’t live closer Zac.

I knew I took more Jim, more to come mate :thumb2

This one is drivers side looking forward, the double skin part on the left is i believe where the body mount is, looking at the rest of the pics though it seems only that one has the reinforcement

If you taking all of the sill off would it be worth considering replacing with stainless steel if you can get hold of it.

Makeitfit and Rick both mentioned forming it in a triangular shape channel point down i think. These would then act like semi sliders and protect the body.

You can weld stainless to mild with your regular set up.

Yeah that will be hard without the tools. Maybe the shape can be formed from three lengths of flat welded along its length to for the triangular channel? Then that can be attached to the car. Lots of welding but you would only need to worry about cutting it and wether your welder had enough juice to fuse the plates together. Unless you can stick weld it.

Yeah I’m wanting stainless but worried about being able to bend it.

I am going mild steel but 6mm thick and 100mm wide welded V formation, and as I have a patrol which has some chassis bits that come much lower than the cills I am contemplating cutting slot in a length of scaffold pole and stitching that on as well, all due for delivery soon, Rick

Well I’m away this weekend so will put all the wifes clobber in the 3litre and let her take over it whilst i pull the project truck off the road to start working on it.
I’ve thought about box section but I think it may interfere with stepping on to the side steps. Will have to speak to my son to see if he has folding equipment where he works.

how about deeper, well wider box section so doubles/triples as step and rock slider.

had last foot or so mine OS done for test, so wondering about what next going whole hog.

perhaps if more to them could have cut outs or tubes for hi lift.

I did a project thread on my rock slider sills some time back. Trouble is the pics are all photophucket
I designed a multi sided sill made from folded steel, 4mm I think. Then welded in the top section. Cut out all the inner and outer sill cheese. Body mounts welded back onto the slider
