Should I buy a new Mav

Hi All

I am in a dilemma and I wanted some advice. I have a 1994 n reg maverick aspen 2.7d it has 130,000 it has a few problems and I cannot make my mind up wether to fix it or buy a new one.

Problems

Side steps are rusted and hanging off It looks like they are welded on to chassis so I need to grind the off before I can get new ones and new ones are well pricey

Autohubs need to be swapped for manuals

Rust on all wheel arches

interor ripped and tatty

I thought about buying a mk2 mav does anything off my mk 1 fit the mk2. I have nice alloys with general grabber at2 tyre on so would like to keep them if possible will they fit a mk2.

also mine seems to have low mileage compared to what i seem to be able to get at the moment many people what lots of money for a mk1 with 200,000 on clock.

Any ideas on what I should do.

what ever you get the side steps could need work, same with ther hubs...

maybe a internal refit with bits from cncfab

however

tax changes 2000 / 2001 to the higher band

old 15's will fit a later one

any help... didnt think so, Ill get my coate

My suggestion would be get the work priced up - you might not be as surprised as you think.

Then work out what the cost of change might be (price for a replacement less the realistic sale price of yours), then add in a bit more for the inevitable problems you will encounter on an oldish unknown truck.

I suspect you may come round to thinking that investing a few quid in a bit of welding and refurb will keep yours on the road for quite a bit longer....:thumb2

cut steps off and bin them, they ain't much use anyway!

get a set of seat covers

manual hubs

job done all in at around £150

go out and enjoy!

depends what you are looking for the facelift model is a tdi so ha a bit more grunt but has problems with electric bits that the phase 1 didnt have

most things should fit out the old into the new

if it was me i would advise to tlook at the phase 1 or phase 2 mistrel these tend to be a bitt better equiped and tend to hold value as well as on the whole are normally rust free

dont know if their was a manual available tho

I did think of binning the steps I never use them but my kids use them to get in. I could get some new box section welded on that would fix it.

The rust on the arches is not too bad bubbly paint at moment so I could get that treated any ideas on best way to do it? Can I get wider plastic trims to fit after I have dealt with rust.

I think I will put manual hubs on autos must be well broke I got stuck in snow today and had to get out and put salt under wheels to get grip, I was pretty annoyed. I was in 4wd high and had been for a while but when I got stuck only rear wheels were going round so no idea what went wrong.

I have £1500 to spent on it so I should have a sweet car by they time I have finished. Any ideas for mods I should do to car.

I love the car best car I have had i did lose faith in it earlier in the year because my rear wheel fell off when driving through town and it passed me whilst I stopped, lucky happened outside fire station so they helped lift the car and get it back on.(no damage just a scrapped drum) Someone undid my wheel nuts all becuase I was going to testify against them. I have got over that experence and I think i will keep the car and do it up

I'd spend the bare minimum and realx with the cash in the bank :thumb2

I agree with PLank, spend the minimum OR buy a new one for that money you could get a decent example (just not a very new one), say an R reg in good condition. Only problem is, "better the devil you know...."

Ba5tards!!! maybe you should remove their nuts too, just not the car ones LOL

PS don't get diverted by this manual hubs nonsense. New snap rings will sort it and unless you are constantly changing into 4WD while driving over boulders at 40mph you will never touch them again.

If you aren't into serious offroading I suspect the SWB petrol would be a good choice....I believe fuel consumption is on a par with the diesel, theres no turbo to worry about and its a reasonably sturdy engine.....and prices tend to be a bit lower than diesel too.:thumb2

I did alway fancy a bit of off roading but I have never made it yet and I have had mav 2 years,

I have never had anyone to go with.

If i was buying one i would need a LWB does petrol need a cambelt or is it gears like mine

well don't be put off, its just the petrol doesn't tend to like deep wading, other than that its fine....green lanes would be no problem.

PM solarman about the cam/cog thing....not sure of the answer but he has two and he gets himself dirty :lol
