Hi guys my mate has bought a 2.7 td mav and the brakes are shocking

The pedal just sinks straight to the floor upon braking !!!!!

When he turns the car off and pumps the brakes the pedal goes hard then when switching the ignition on they slowly creep down ?

Also when pumping the brakes when the truck is idling the pedal goes Harding then creeps down to the floor again

The handbrake is shite too !

I said the master cylinder ?
Could it be a simply bleed or rear wheel cylinder ??

Any help would be great guys

My immediate thought to that is air in the system.

The first job has to be checking for leaks, obvious ones would be corroded pipes, calliper pistons and wheel cylinders.

If no leaks are visible try bleeding the system and maybe pumping the pedal until it pushes clean fluid through.

Hope that helps?

yep i agree, do a complete system bleed check the rubber housings on the cylinders they are prone to crack or split and check brake lines the ones that run from bulkhead to rear diff areas are prone too rot especially if they are still the factory steel ones

brakes

sounds like a split hose or more likely a leaking wheel cylinder

good luck its not a terrible job to do just remember where the springs locate

i drew a little diagram

paulp

.

Thanks guys I think I'll Bleed the system up first then see if there any leaks

I'll report back in a few days

Id go with that :), you haven't been getting any patches on the drive appearing have you?

My money's on rear brake cylinders and then air not bled from the load sensor?

Is the fluid the correct one and is it going down to bring the light on. If not sounds like air in system. Try back, mine had leak when first got it. David.

Personally since the hand brake is naff, then as this is mechanical, you need to sort this out first.

The adjusters in there are automatic, they basically don't work.

When the handbrake is adjusted they hold my mav on a steep hill. Even with a 2 tonne boat attached to it.

There is a down load on this.

Start working on the rear brake drums to see if you can get them off, you will need to slacken off the handbrake cable, using an m10 af spanner or socket. The nut is under the handbrake lever, and it is possible if you have a deep 10 mm socket on a 3/8" drive to reach the nut under the handbrake by moving aside the rubber skirt. This saves you having to remove the centre squab..

You will need 2m8 bolts that screw into the brake drum that will help to release the drum, but some wd 40 squirted in here first may help to release them if they are rusty.

Then you can have a look at the rear cylinders too.

Hope this helps.

Best regards, Rustic

Strip the rear brakes as rustic said, h'brake needs sorting so check adjuster in the shoes

Did mine 5k ago, h'brake was on 5 notches after i adjusted it, now its coming up all the way again about 20 notches, seems to just wind its self off inside the drum, not really sure what is causing it as it looked fine when i stripped it, also had a slight weep inside the rubbers on wheel cylinders, but didn't bother replacing them, job for the weekend but been saying that for weeks :D

I'd also say rear brakes. If there's air in the system, the rear brakes won't do anything. If the rear brakes are out of adjustment, that'd explain the crap handbrake.

The pedal will develop a LOT of travel if there is air in the system, but it's entirely normal for the pedal to go hard with the engine off as there's no servo pressure unless it's running.

On mine, I was getting airlocks because fluid was leaking out of the rear cylinders, but you'll easily be able to see if that's the problem when you pull the shoes off to adjust the rear brakes up. I had to bleed it with the engine running to then clear the brake lines of air.

re hand brake adjusting, there is a tell tale button on the rear bottom of the back plate, with the HB off (chock the wheels) you should not be able to push this button in, with the HB on you will be able to, if you can push it in with the HB off then the cables are adjusted up too much and need backing off at the HB lever, Rick
