Don't they recommend that you don't grease your nuts

I think most of ue do to make sure we can take them off again, could this be the problem.

It was a long time ago, My Father was driving and we lost a trailer wheel, it came off hit a kerb and went over a fence without touching it.

I had the task of knocking on the door, as a kid, and asking "Can I have my wheel back ?" There it was in long grass, with no signs of how it got there.

We were over loaded at the time, but the wheel nuts were still in the metal hub cap. It only had 3 wheel studs and nuts, axle must have been off an old Citroen. The studs were totally stripped of threads, so this hadn't come loose as such.

well its always amazed me how many people overtighten their nuts :augie

this happened to me on the m60, god it was bad:eek:
must have been about 4 months ago.
i looked at nuts and all had dodgy threads, changed them all, and a new lower ball joint (which was only 4 weeks old) car sat on balljoint nut and wore it away skidding down the road.
to be fare ran straight and true on 3 wheels, didnt pull to left, which was odd:)

anyway, found out that these cars had a recall, due to wheels falling off, check on VOSA, not sure what cure was, but touch wood not done it again, i do now tend to check wheel nuts.

Got a pair from ebay for £30 to the door, in no rush to fit it.. ;)

The wheel nuts on my mav, with alloy wheels are made of brass, so you daren't overtighten them, I always use a torque wrench.

When I bought the Mav, I fitted locking wheel nuts that gave me some spare wheel nuts, I have now replaced 2 of them as the garage in the old days of dealer servicing stripped 2, and it left the brass curls on the studs. They cleaned up ok though but wrecked the wheel nut.

The dealer, in the days they were servicing it, stripped 2 wheel nuts, sheared off one of the allen bolts on the front auto Hub, forgot to fit the rocker box cover correctly, left out the seals on the bolts, resulting in oil hissing down the back of the engine.

Dented a sill, as they thought it was a good place to jack it up from....

I'll probably thing of a few others...

In the old days before collecting your car either from a dealer or tyre place, they used to demonstrate the torque by using a torque wrench ( set correctly), in front of you.

Who has seen this done recently? :nenau :nenau

So why do wheels fall off..... Wrong torque settings, too slack and they undo, too tight and they shear off.

I rest my case.

Check your nuts daily...... :naughty :naughty

:doh

The dealer was a Ford Dealer, ( No longer trading now, the M6 Toll road went straight through their sales office :lol :lol :lol )

All the jobs were done under the 3 year warrenty, after the 3 years I went to Nissan dealers, they were ok, but for the last 8-9 years I have done all servicing myself.

Do a bit today, a bit next month ..... easy to do... even that damn oil filter is easy now I remove the nearside wheel, mostly to tighten the new filter.:doh
