Yesterday I was driving along without a care in the world when suddenly the T2 just lost power. I changed down gears however nothing. The engine was still running but the steering became heavy and eventually once pulled in the engine cut out. No warning lights came on (potentially the battery light but not sure). My question is would a faulty connector to the battery do this? I have had problems with the battery connections (think the positive has a small cracking which requires wiggling sometimes to make a connection) or is this something more sinister???

Thank god for your post, it's been too quiet round here of late, it's nice to have to think about a problem for once, I'm not sure that the crack in your positive terminal is your issue because as we know (or should) you can swap a battery on a Diesel whilst the engine is running :thumbs

I have had this once and only once with the Terrano and a restart of the engine resolved it however I never did get to the bottom of what caused it :nenau

This is my issue, when the engine stopped I turned the key expecting to get nothing and she started again without any issues. Since yesterday's incident it hasn't happened again. I thought it was the case that once started u can take the battery out in a diesel.

I wondered about fuel starvation however within seconds of stopping I started it again without any issues. I did go to change the fuel filter recently only to find that the fuel filter I had ordered didn't match the fuel filter on my car so ended up putting it all back together again and primed. I have changed the glow plugs some months ago and the water pump, thermostate and belts two weeks ago. Last week the ecu was showing no faults so I am really really puzzled. Add to all of this the fact that I am meant to be taking the old girl on a thousand mile round trip to the south of France in two weeks it has me worried.

First of all fix the battery terminal, it won't help.

Does the fuel cut out solenoid need to be energised to run the engine, in which case it may be cutting power and in turn stopping engine.

My other thought is crankshaft position sensor.

Have you tried reading codes as per download just in case something is recorded.

Keep in mind the possibility of a failing crankshaft positition sensor.....

Were the hell is that and how much of a pain is it to change (couldn't see anything in downloads/links). From the looks of it they arnt expensive so might just change it anyway, at least that would rule out one thing if it happened again.

Id start with the fuel filter as the taking off and putting back on may have shifted the muck in there I had this when running waste oil as filter kept sludging up so changed filter there and then and all was fine. Yours could be early sign filter has had enough

This is the problem when you do lots of jobs in a short time, when something goes wrong... then what is it?

You clearly have two issues that you must eliminate first, the battery terminal, and a replacement fuel filter. There are some dodgy fuel filters around, so at this late stage, I would get one from Nissan.

I wouldn't recommend running a modern diesel without a battery, the Alternator has no load, so can't regulate, and might give out a high voltage, this could damage your ECU, dash display, radio, and every bulb that happens to be on at the time, including the dash bulbs.

Certainly worth replacing the CPS I think it could be in one of two places, depending on the year.
Good luck, and safe trip.

Sounds like a fuel issue to me, I would not rule out the possibility of debris in the pot in the tank, as once the engine stopped the suction would be removed from the pipe and the offending item can fall back off of the suck pipe allowing a restart, as long as the item stays clear it will continue running, so I would not be going on a long trip without having a look in the tank and also as others have said change the filter, also worth checking and repairing any poor electrics, Bosch pump = cps on top of bell housing, straight swap for cheap Audi one, Zexel = on timing case, Audi one will fit but adaptor will be needed, but I doubt it is this in your case as I believe that if this fails with the engine running it will continue to run in fail safe mode, and also you would have got the engine light on, and if it fails engine off it will not start, Ray can confirm this I hope, Rick

It sounds exactly same as what I had problem with few weeks ago. I had replaced the earth screw under the coolant reservoir and it sort it it.
The terrano has been fine since.
