Hi Gang and Happy New Year to all.

Its been a while since I was last here, and thats basically because the old girl has been giving me no trouble.

Ok, so today she goes for MOT, failed on a couple of things, exhaust rubbers needed replacing and parking brake was low. So, they said they would check it out.

So, picked her up this evening, all done. They informed me that they had adjusted the brake and all was good and changed the rubbers on exhaust hanger, as I know the manager there, the whole thing came to £70 including the MOT....bargain.......but she's going back in the morning.

On the way home, the clutch felt odd, very light and biting very low, by the time i reached home i was having problems getting a gear.

My theories:
While faffing about with the exhaust rubbers they have done something to the clutch damper pipe?
or
Depending on how they adjusted the brakes have managed to screw something up with the pedal?

Either way, she's going back and a sharp word will be had with the fellow!

Any advance on my theories?

Pete

Yep, checked the fluid level, looks fine.

I'm a bit confused how over adjusting the handbrake would affect the clutch though?

Pete

you need to ask them how they sorted the hand brake, as it MUST NOT BE ADJUSTED ON THE CABLE, the drums have to come off and adjust the shoes till you can just get the drums back on, there is a test button on the back plate bottom and to the rear with the HB off this button should be fuly out and not be able to be pushed in, this indicates the internal lever is in the correct OFF position, if the button can be pushed in the it is wrong, it normally protrudes about 15 mm, re the clutch, unrelated as far as normal practice is concerned, I say that as you never know what odd things people can do, Rick

Thanks for that Rick, hopefully they will be able to take a look in the morning and I can ask the nice gentleman what he has done to my baby

I"ve had an idea.....:doh

I wonder if they tried to bleed the rear brakes, and they found the bleed screw for the clutch, and by opening it they let air into the damper pipe.

It is the logical answer that could explain it.

Not bad answer, for 5:00 am...

Well, thats a turn up

Took her back to the garage this morning after limping all the way there with barely any clutch.
Mechanic friend came out, pressed the peddle and said "have you checked the fluid level", with a beaming face I replied, yes of course I have.....bugger me popped the bonnet and it was nearly empty.

He spent about 5 mins topping it up and pumping the pedal until we got some clutch back, then popped it on the ramps. Checked everything underneath, not a spot anywhere on the damper pipe, so theory 1 out the window. As we moved back up to the slave cylinder I spotted it, weeping fluid around the gaiter, bugger.

So, it appears it was just sheer coincidence then, I trust the guy and know he wouldn't have doe anything dodgey, in fact he bled it for me to get me going and din't charge a penny. Taking it back Monday to get the slave replaced.

The best thing is, he said he'll do the the job for £50, so its a no-brainer and no need to get cold and dirty
