Shaky steering at 60mph

When travelling at 50mph i get no steering shake but at 60 i do, ive had new tyres fitted and all 4 wheels balanced and it still shakes, when i jack the front wheel up and spin the wheel by hand, at a certain point the tyre will touch the ground, could this possibly be out of shape alloys or any other ideas welcome please

These wheels have big centre holes and many car type tyre places can't or wont balance them properly.
What tyres and sizes are they? Where did you get them fitted?

To check the rims, place an object next to the wheel, and say a screw driver on top aimed at the rim, and note any deviation as the wheel rotates.

Not as accurate as a Dial Test Indicator, but if your tyre is that bad, at least you can eliminate the rim.

Also check any wheel bearing play.

Make sure your anti-roll bar and front shocks are connected :lol:lol:lol

On a serious note.... I certainly echo the sentiments of 'Makeitfit' - cheap tyres can sometimes be the worst thing when it comes to balancing and tracking.

All of the above....but highly unlikely its bent alloys.

Try swapping wheels around and see if it makes a difference and if the one you speak of is that far out of whck, get it refitted....what make of tyre is it?

Hmmm...not a well known make so quite possible that the tyre is not symmetrical or is badly fitted.

I'd be tempted to do what I suggested, swap fronts and rears and see if that makes a difference...at least if it does it narrows your search down.

If it turns out to be the out-of-true one then I;d suggest taking it to a decent fitter and getting it re-done.

Failing that, as suggested, you're then looking for loose droplinks etc..

One other thing to check (but it would have been a mention or failure on an MoT) is that the wheel bearings are prone to going if not tightened properly and can even knacker the half shaft - to check, jack the wheel and try to rock by holding top and bottom....if theres movement its easy to tighten them but I've seen the locking nuts and threads stripped, requiring a new half shaft and thats a right PITA.

Final thing is check wheelnuts. They should be a tapered face NOT flat as they are ALL that centres the wheel. Thats why its important on these trucks to tighten the wheelnuts BEFORE you drop it off the jack and do it properly, i.e. each opposing nut one at a time.:thumb2

Found the problem to my truck, it needed a new universal joint on the front half shaft
