This is driving me mad. It's an 03 2.7TDi LWB, running 16" alloys and General Grabber 2 AT's, i've run these tyres for years so I know it's not them at fault.

Essentially the car shudders and shakes a lot. It's not a big shake, but an almost constant one. When ever the car goes over any sort of bump the entire car shudders, quite a bit. I've had all the suspension checked, OK. I've had all the wheels balanced twice, by different people, OK. It recently went thru a NI MOT which is very strict, OK.

I'm now at a loss as to where to start looking.

Any suggestions?

engine/gearbox mounts or clutch on way out could give you shuddering when pulling off theyd usally settle down after that though!

I know you said its not the tyres, but check in between the tread for cracks. I had a similar problem once and a new tyre had a crack in it.

Did the cracked tyre not show up in balancing?

No, because the tyre does not come into contact with tarmac on balancing.

Coopers ST's splitting

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks,
I was giving the Patrol a wash today and was admiring my six week old Coopers ST's, only to notice a split following the curve of the tyre about 2-3 cm from the rim. They've only done 2,000k's. I looked at the rest and found that three of the four had the same split to some extent.
I know there are plenty of people who will say serve you right for buying Coopers! But in my defence prior to buying the tyres I spoke to people that had experienced problems with both tyres on my short list, Coopers ST's and BFG AT's. There were also plenty of people who were very happy with both brands.
The tyre centre said they will be replaced under warranty. That's fine, but I'm planning to do 6,000k,s next month towing a camper trailer. Some of it will be off the beaten track. I will have to run up a few k's on the replacement tyres as well as the spare before I head off, just to be sure. I'm starting to feel a distinct lack of confidence in the product.

i just had split repaired in one rear grabbers its also ripping tread blocks off (must stop spinning outve junctions and sideways round the islands!)

Suspension or shocks certainly "springs" to mind, then shock absorbers.
Have you checked all the suspension points. ( the MOT would have picked this up) The rear axle has the cross suspension tie bar as well as the trailing arms, and the front is more complex with ball joints top and bottom and the bushes top and bottom. Check also the front roll bar, the joints on these on the front of the wishbone are first to go.
Also check the wheel bearings and play in the steering and the obvious loose wheel nuts other than that you need to look at the 8 rubber mounts that hold the body to the chassis, you will see these under the vehicle one under the back of the drivers seat, inside the sill you will see a long bolt and rubber buffers about 60-70 mm dia
Engine and gearbox mouts are the next thought. If someone has jacked the vehicle up by the engine or gearbox, it may be possible to rip one.
Although members are constantly grounding on rocks with no problems..
Is it worse if you go over a speed bump with your left wheels or with your right wheels, just a thought.. You may be able to discover which wheel is worst if you position the vehicle correctly while riding the speed humps..
hope this helps or gives you further thoughts..

Thanks for all that, will look into it tomorrow and report back.
