Hi All,

So after my successful attempt at replacing the air filter with an Induction Kit I figured I would give DIY servicing a go.

I have no idea when the car was last serviced as its not been stamped in about 60k miles lol!!!

So, does anyone know anywhere that I can get one of the service kit things that contains all the filters etc I need? I have seen a few flying about but not sure whats decent and whats not.

Also, what should I be changing / cleaning on a DIY service?

Thanks,
Gav

I wouldn't go for a kit as it will probably have an air filter you don't need, this is a good pace to start :thumb2

thy are pretty flexible and may do you a kit with no air filter if you ask!

So effectively if I break it down, I only need and Oil filter and a Fuel filter?

Isnt there anything else that needs doing? lol

check and grease door hinges and lube locks.

Check brakes, clean caliper sliders, inspect discs and drums.

check brake lines for corrosion ( rub down and a coat of grease is good)

check fuel lines ... ditto

Inspect for any early signs of corrosion and treat as required

blob of grease on all 4 steering stops
Check fluid levels in diffs, gear box and transfer box.

Check coolant level and strenght.

Check other fluids brake, clutch power steering.

Depending on milage you may wish to change gearbox or diff oils or even change the lot.

Check water level in battery cells - this one is usually neglected unitl its too late.

I've probably missed somehting but some one else will chip in :thumb2

bear in mind, you don't have to do all these tasks at once, they could be part of a rolling routine of DIY maintenance. I like to keep receipts for bits and write the milage on them and what work was done as part of a hme service record.

You don't need a kit especially if you already have air filter sorted. Main items are probably, oil filter, fuel filter and engine oil. Filters are cheap enough. No harm to change differential oils and gearbox oil if you don't know when it was last serviced so you will need lsd oil and gearbox oil.

You should change the brake fluid every few years, say maximum of 5 years, as the fluid absorbs water and increases the corrosion on the components.

Be aware, if using the 2 person method, where someone sits in the drivers seat and presses the brake pedal down, while you open the bleed nipple etc

DON'T press the brake pedal to the floor, this can damage the seals in the master cylinder. Several members have had problems with this.

So I would put say a brick/ block of wood under the brake pedal to limit the travel during this operation.

Change the clutch fluid as this often gets neglected. It will probably look dark in colour, not straw coloured like new fluid.

Hope this helps,
Best regards, Rustic.

had mine done

just had mine done today all filters and oils changed new front pads all joints greased etc etc i just dont have the time at the moment to do it so let the mechanic do the lot and check out some rust on the inside of the off side rear wheel arch i new it was there when i bought the car the innner sill is still good so gonna weld a patch in the spring he reports back its a sound car just needs the rear half shaft seals and bearing done as there leaking a tiny bit so iv rebooked it in for next week while he has it iv said to do the brake cylinders and shoes as well then i know the brakes are all good there all simple things to do so go for it just take your time :thumbs
