so, today I carried out the service on the terrano. the first one for some time it would seem.......

first off, air filter. Maf removed, fiter housing opened, filter remov.....Holy ****! I have NEVER seen a filter that bad! ok, things are going to be fun. new filter fitted and on to the fuel filter.

nice and easy. great. drain the engine oil now, sump plug found, removed, and seriously black stuff drained into the catch pan. ok, now for the oil filter....

I should explain at this point that the car had a little oil leak. i noticed it at the sellers house, but it looked small so I made a mental note to investigate later.

the filter seems to be amazingly hard to access, so i was expecting to have a nightmare to remove it. nope. it wasn't even finger tight! no wonder it was leaking! filter removed, from above (is there a better way?) and new one fitted. at this oint i thought i would investigate access from below. the car wasn't on stands, so it was a bit tight, but i fitted. as did my arm between the prop and the gearbox.

couldn't get it back out though :doh

ten minutes later, my arm was freed, and i went back up top to tighten up the filter.

next was the rear diff oil. black as expected, but easy to change. one thing to note, it took less than 2 litres, but the sheet said 2.3. anyway....

front diff, draining was easy, refilling was a nightmare. rubbish access, but managed in the end.

gearbox - easy to drain, took about 5 litres t refill back up to the filler hole :nenau thought it was supposed to be 3.5??

transfer box, probably the easiest of the lot :thumb2

finally, pollen filter. oh dear. i think i may have disturbed an eco system when i removed that  but the new one is in, and all is well in the world.

after servicing the passat and octavia in around 40 mins each, this was a bloomin nightmare! but glad its done now.

time for some wine. :D

cheers for all of the help found on the forum, it was a great bonus to know the pitfals in advance,

Lee

An afternoon well spent :).
Oil filter access is easier (on the TDI at least) through the wheel well - you only need to undo the mudflap. Can't remember if I removed the wheel, probably did to check brake disc, pads etc

Bloody good work old boy!!!!

The EcoSystem pollen filter line made me laugh out loud :lol

Well done, a busy day indeed. I did my pollen filter on my project truck last week which made a huge difference to the air flow.

As for the oil leak, keep an eye on it. Exepct that any oil you spilled when doing the filter will drip anyway but take a look at this thread about an oil leak, I too thought it was oil filter but turned out to be a union on the oil filter housing.

cheers guys, and thanks for the tip perelaar :)

i wouldn't worry too much about the leak Jim, when i say the oil filter was loose, i mean it was only about 4 turns from off!

...... and given a score from 0 - 10 and 10 being total disaster .... what is the state of the drive :lol

not too bad - did it in the old mans garage which has a painted floor.

if it had been on my drive, it would have been a 9.5!

not too sure tbh Banshee, i'm not up to speed on green lanes etc, but if you fancy a mini meet, i'm game :thumb2

Awesome!!! I'll have to let you know closer to the time and I'll scout the OS maps for some lanes near there :naughty

Just did the filter on mine I removed the wheel & the rubber flappy thing you can fill the new filter with oil before you screw it back on this way.

Yep, this was my pollen filter,

20160320_111638.jpg

what brand filter did u use, I got a wix one but not happy with how it seals

Doesn't look quite the same as the one on the right of that picture.
How easy is it to change the pollen filter I haven't done mine yet?

the pollen filter i had didn't have the plastic frame like the original one, just some open cell foamy stuff to seal. but then i guess it cant be any worse than the one i took out, which was just about 3 times as bad as the one pictured above!

as for changing it, follow the workshop download and you really cant go wrong :)
