Took the spare wheel off the other day, in the wheel mounting bracket there is a wire and what I thought was a bulb, but when I removed it, it looks like a sensor.

Is this the temp sensor?

Around 2000-2002'ish (might be a bit later) they did have a wire coming out of the back door but i've no idea what it was for:confused: often wondered if it was linked to the spare wheel cover & alarm so if anyone removed the cover the alarm went off:nenau

I thought it was a light bulb - strange says I. I popped it out and it looked like the shape/size as a small capless bulb, but it was black plastic. I can only assume that it is a sensor, for what? Outside temperature maybe?

Anyone?

BTW - it's a 2001 on a Y Plate.

Can't find any reference to it in the workshop manual :nenau

I need to know :naughty

Sweet!!!!! If it does turn out to be an external temp sender I'm going to find one at James' with one as this is a mod I've been itching to do

You know if you give a bulb a coating of coloured lacquer if gives off light of that colour, and the surrounding area glows that colour too.

This, I believe was an experiment by Nissan, they thought by painting the bulb black, would make the light given off black too, so the whole of the vehicle would be in shadow, and not be seen from the rear.

A sort of cloaking device.

Great if you get caught by rearwards facing speed cameras, as you wouldn't be seen.:thumb2

But unfortunately caused no end of rear end shunts, so was soon abandoned by Nissan.:doh

:lol

Damned clever, these Japanese!)

Buy does anyone know what it is? :nenau

Do you want a picture, has anyone got the same?

Here's the standard tailgate wiring harness, all connectors on here are identified. Something of a mystery.......

Yeah I have seen that wiring picture Ray.

I've got the valet guy coming round at 08:30 tomorrow as long as it does not rain and will take the spare wheel off to allow him to get to the back door. I will pop this 'sensor' out and take a photee :thumb2

I remember asking the very same question 12 months ago and I still never found out what it was for.

I thought temp gauge, alarm. Its deffo not the t4 rear light connector.
And it is deffinatly supposed to be on the rear carrier but for what:nenau.
I will was my wheel off tomoz as I can't even remember if I left it on or removed it:nenau
Its also a good excuse to repaint the carrier and give my spare a good check over.

Over the years there have been several suggestions. I once wondered if there is a spare wheel cover with a brake light on it perhaps. Good idea with the temp sensor though.

simple to prove, if you have the dash that has a temp readout, just turn ignition on, note the temperature reading (should be around ambient) then go to rear and hold sensor in your hand for a few mins then check display, if it reads around 28-30 or so then you have found the external sensor, Alex is coming tomorrow, if I remember I will check his, Rick

I'm sure all of the 04, 05 etc models didn't have this strange bulb thing so Alex shouldn't have one fitted I know mine hasn't but the outside temp gauge does work fine, but my mates 2001 T2 also has this mystery wire:nenau

FWIW: the ambient temp. sensor connector F105 is on the front N/S:

I did try and breathed on it, but the dash readout didn't change. Maybe I've got cool breath :augie

I will check again tomorrow.

Or you killed it with bad breath :augie

I will keep my eyes peeled for this sensor as hopefully my bumper is coming off tomorrow. I will snap pics :thumb2
