Searching could it be Maf or more sinister?

Well as stated in my previous thread my Terrano is now running but wont idle. Starting is difficult but it will rev hard, but as soon as its left to idle is searching. Have cleared MIL light and codes 12, 21, 22 keep coming back. 12 being MAF 21, 22 fuel pressure sensor. Eventually it will stall if left to idle, but on 2 occassions over the last 2 days it has idled perfectly for around 2 minutes then searches again! If left searching for a long time there is a very feint knock on fuel pump. Was hoping to have it running for this weekend for trip to coast but dont look like thats gonna happen :hmh Just hoping someone recognises this type of fault to give me a better idea of where/ What fault maybe. Obviously to have it diagnosed at garage is gonna be big ££££'s. Friend came round with his diagnostic set up tonight but hasnt got the adapter to fit my truck.
Cheers Rich..

Pics to follow when it's actually on road..lol

Have you checked the fuel lines running along the chassis near the drivers side rear wheel arch area. Could be letting air in?

Hi Fez, no not checked the fuel lines, so do they run from tank to wheel arch or over rear axle, where do they tend to let air in? if they are leaking there can i cut out and replace with rubber?
Cheers Rich

You can easily exclude this by running off can of diesel just get a bit of fuel hose and put it in a can

Ok, today tried Terrano fault finding again today, changed the inlet to filter to clear pipe and outlet to pump aswell very few air bubbles on start up but put that down to the fact I changed the pipes!! idled really well for about 5 minutes but didnt drive just idled. Then hunting / searching again, disconnected MAF no difference, so could the MAF be my problem? Have looked in the downloads for testing current but it is for the Bosch type, mine is the Hitachi MAF, is the connection block the same? Have checked fuel pipes from tank for leaks and no sign of anything. If my MAF is knackered is there a good place to buy? is it worth trying to find one to try first, before shelling out? Cheers Rich..

Could be cranksensor as 21 is to do with timing advance valve in side the pump but what controls this is ecu with sensors cranksensor and injector no.1 needle lift sensor the rough idle to me points to cranksensor or needle lift sensor £120+vat or worse case pump

Ok changed crank sensor with no difference, terrible on idle but I have driven it and hard aswell and it dont miss a beat but as its auto as soon as you come to junction etc it will hunt and stall unless you left foot brake it and keep revs on with right foot! cnc fabs has a pump if I need it just gotta get number off mine to match it up, but could it really be pump when it drives so well, no smoke as wife followed to make sure it didnt stop altogether, but as soon as you come to halt and let it idle it smokes!! What I thought was a slight knock on fuel pump isnt, its the egr valve making the noise. I have so far changed all filters, ckp, cleaned MAF a million times, bypassed fuel filter housing with pipe and fuel can, cleaned all connections with contact cleaner and none of this has improved it at all! Also cleared codes and driven and it takes quite a while for mil light to reappear but it does!! It's driving me nuts..lol

Was ckp new or second hand

Hi Geoff , CKP was new my brother is parts manager at BMW in Coventry and got me a decent discount £84 all in but still didnt solve it..lol. Phoned Carwoods big diesel specialist in Coventry and he told me what he thinks it is straight away, says its almost certainly fuel pressure regulator valve on back of pump, reckons they have done 6 or 7 terranos with exactly same symptoms over last 12 months. Wont even begin to tell you cost for diagnosis etc, I nearly fell over!!

Go on tell us you know you want to

Back to square one with my Terrano!! Bought new crank sensor and didnt improve in fact got worse and would not start at all over weekend, called out RAC and he told me there was no reading from new sensor so obviously knackered, put old one back on and it fired up!! Took it back and refund as they told me no more in stock! Went to another factors in Coventry and they could order one but after looking at plug and dimensions etc its not the right fitment, length was fine but was only 16mm diameter. Nissan main dealers want £194 + VAT, Cant stretch to that at minute when it might not even be the sensor thats faulty, so how many different types of crank sensors are there? The dimensions on mine are 22mm length, 24mm diameter, and plug looks like this!!

where is ur cranksensor front of engine or on top of bell housing and is it bosch or hititch system

Really beginning to get to me this truck, had it 3 weeks and done 4 miles in it..lol.
Latest episode was yesterday when I blocked off / plated egr valve, truck idled beautifully for a whole 10 mins, just thought id let it idle whilst I finished my cup of tea and feeling very pleased with myself for my afternoons work would then take it for its first serious trip since my ownership began!! Err no, started hunting again as soon as it got some heat into engine so I turned it off, came in for a bit to scratch my head again went back out and wouldnt start!! No fuel at injectors, 1/4 of tank in it so no low fuel issues just wont bloody start. Checked codes and number 18 and it wont clear.
Really beginning to wish id never clapped eyes on this Terrano, anybody close enough to Coventry to dare come and have a look? lol.
Phoned loads of garages but they all say the same could be this could be that. Not so bad when it is running so you can try then dismiss things but not running and different ball game!! Why o Why didnt I stick to what I know best and get a mk1 LWB??
Cheers Again Rich..

Sorry late on this one. You've only idled then since changing fuel filter and putting on clear fuel pipes? Is that right? In any case if you've still got the clear lines on is there any fuel there? Could be coincidence as your's is auto, are you sure there's no auto box related issues ? Could even be throttle position sensor and or micro switch .
Have you got aircon on yours? Just wondering if as things warm up it cuts in and stalls or loads the engine and the ecu isnt picking up the revs accordingly?

Damn it , forgot about that one :D and a cheap fix too, good luck :thumbs
