Hello can anyone advise.
My 1995 Patrol is now showing slight signs of chassis rust. Does not look serious but is there any way to protect the chassis from this getting worse.
Perhaps paint?????

Is there a site out there that can advise what kind of paint, how to apply it and what preperation is needed?

Is it more difficult than clean, rub down, metal prime and then a good top coat of Hammerite on all the already painted surfaces???

Any advice most appreicated?

Just done mine with a combination of schutz with waxoyl, because I had it and dinitrol for the box sections. All sprayed on with a comp using underseal gun.

Have a look here http://www.rust.co.uk/

There are loads of sites with info.

:D

I also wondered as a pre-treatment if these budget sand/bead blasters were any cop?

I've always gone at the scruffier bits with a wire brush then similar to jockey but my choice is waxoyl thinned with white spirits spareyed on with a sub £20 electric spray gun from B&Q.........:thumbs

I just did my ouside sills with underseal and inner sills with waxoyl , DAMN MY CAR STINKS. :doh

Thanks for the advice

The products on the advised site look pretty comprehensive but isnt the drilling of box sections a little overkill??? I mean how do you get the spray to fill the inner surfaces with wax, is it some kind of foaming agent or reliance on the spray to cover the inner surfaces of the metal?

Since some of the paint is flaking on underbody parts does this procedue seem ok?
1) Raise the car with the wheels removed
2) Complete clean of underbody
3) Wire brush all areas of rust
4) Epoxy mastic paint all areas of steel where paint has flaked or is worn.
5) Spray with dinitrol underbody wax for final protection.

Also do you recommend the wax for sills, my roof sill is ok but it does seem vulnerable in future?

Thanks for any advice. I am a bit of a novice at this.

Looks intresting ronypony,

Have you used the "metal ready" with it aswell?

I pumped 2.5L into each sill .....

You might like to investigate this paint product. I 've used it myself and found it to be amazingly effective...but don't take my word for it...check out the testimonials..

Its quite expensive but boy does it work..

Hi Toolbox

Nope I didn't use the metal ready m8...the paint itself was dear enough. The metal I was painting only had mild surface rust which I wire brushed off first.Gottta say though that its the best anti rust preparation I personally have ever come across. The coverage of it is excellent and it goes a long way. God help you though if you get it on your skin...nothing takes it off...you have to wait until your skin sheds its top layer before it goes.It warns about wearing the proper protection when using it.

I used it to paint the chassis of my Mahindra Jeep...that was 4 years ago and it looks as fresh with no hint of the dreaded rust appearing. I have also used it to paint up suspension parts...old shocks and springs...they still look fantastic after 3 years...

Check out http://www.por15.com/ for indepth info on this fantastic paint.

Hello, Ive got 2litres on order.
Just a question, did you just brush on the stuff or can it be sprayed (seems like spraying may waste alot of this expensive paint), also did you bother with a top coat or waxoil?

I'm thinking of getting some to spruce up my front and rear diffs.

I wouldn't use Spruse, as its a pine tree, better of with a ply wood or oak really.

sorry couldn't let that one pass me by!
