My 02 2.7 TII is running cold.
Temperature gauge has been sitting lower than normal, or sitting low and then occasionally rising to the normal position.
This morning it just sat on the stop and the heater barely got warm.

I assume the obvious is a sticky thermostat, and the old game of taking it off and boiling it in a pan will tell me if its duff.
But being an 02, is the plastic housing going to fall apart as soon as I touch it?

Where is the thermostat anyway?

id say be prepared with that housing - they almost all crack. Grab a metal one form an old Maverick or something.

Thermostat is under the housing, three bolts holding the housing on, remove that and its under there - lots of fluid will leak out.

Ahhhhhhhhh Thermostats, that brings back memories!!!!

I had one fail shut on the Maverick and nearly cook my head :doh

I did the pan test, took it to nearly 100 degrees and it still didn't open, as already stated the Mav had the metal housing, see if you can grab one from an older one ;)

In terms of location, there's a big rubber pipe that goes to it, in the link below, look at the 2nd pic and it's the inlet sticking out where the rubber pipe goes onto, there's 2 or 3 bolts that holds it on and the stat drops in there, make sure you have a gasket

It's also worthwhile buying a sheet of gasket paper from the car spares shop and tracing round the original one and chucking a few spares in the toolbox in the shed :thumb2

Nothing wrong here at all.... just preparing for summer it is :augie :augie :augie

Can I withdraw my comment on an earlier thread that Alex has now started to give good answers...
Clearly that must have been a one off.
I did say, I was under the influence of my pain killers at the time.:augie

could be the viscous clutch on the fan not disengaging meaning the engine is being constantly fanned with cool air.

Trust me he'd know if that was the case, it'd sound like a Merc Sprinter :clap

even if it was then it would only mean the rad was over cooled which will not in any way effect engine temperature as this is controlled by the thermostat, Rick
