Ref my last question regarding a rubbing noise coming from the rear shells area.
As advised I had all pads and shoes checked front and rear, all changed for new.
However still getting the noise.
It is definitely louder on full lock particuarly over rough ground.I have put it. Into four wheel drive and out to see if anything is sticking, but makes no difference.

When driving at any speed right up to 80mph, I cannot hear anything at all,but when I slow down and gear down to get into my drive which is a slight incline I get this sort of rubbing/grinding noise.always from the rear end.
The car itself runs superbly well.
Does anyone have any ideas what this might be. Might it be worth running it in 4wheel drive for a couple of miles to see if any improvement, say coming into my drive in 4wheel drive to see if it still occurs.
Thanks
Jon

don't run in 4wd on very grippy surfaces like tarmac.

On full lock it's prob the lockstops just grease them up, the other thing could be a dud ARB drop link, noticed a not so nice grinding noise on mine at full lock going up the kerb & found a little play in the O/S/F drop link:doh

rear diff oil needs changing, make sure it is limited slip on the bottles, trust me this is the problem, Rick

What do you mean by limited slip on the bottles.

Is changing the differential oil a pro job.

Any pictures on line

Easy enough to change, we mostly use Comma LSD gear oil, around £5 a litre,
older models take 2.8 litres, the later models have a different rear diff and take about half this amount. Your local car parts place may have some but can certainly get some for you, but aim for £5 per litre, some have paid as little as £4.99 per litre:lol:lol

TIP
Slacken filler plug BEFORE draining oil, as if the filler plug is jammed and you drain the oil ... you are stuck. The end of a 1/2" socket wrench works fine, no special tools requited.

NOTE: You MUST use limited slip differential oil, if you use standard gear oil you will have problems, and if this is the case then, you might need to change the oil again say in 1000 miles to purge all the cr*p oil out.

When you drain the oil, it will look thick and coloured, mine was grey, due to the wear of the friction material in the diff assembly, this is quite normal if the oil hasn't been changed for say 20-30 k miles...

Hope this helps, no pictures needed. you will see the filler plug on the back of the diff half way up, and the drain is underneath the diff.

You don't even need to jack the vehicle up.

best regards,

Rustic
